When did the U.S. Mint start selling uncut currency sheets?

Probably about 10 minutes after they realized somebody other than them (the Bureau of Engraving and Printing) was making money from collectors.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I took an uncut sheet of (4) $1 bills once and tore one off to try and pay for something. They refused to accept it!

Here's the link to the BEP...they have all sorts of uncut currency. Word of note, once the uncut sheets of old style $5/$10/$20 sell out, that's it. Only the new style will be available. Alot of people are rat-holing these.

    Cheers,

I bought a 16 count $1 sheet from the BEP in DC and had it displayed in a frame in my office. One of my co-workers wanted to know how I got the individual bills lined up so evenly.

I told her because I took my time and I'm so talented!

They started selling them about 2 months ago. It was somewhat of a mix-up, as they sent out email via the US Mints Newsletter, stating they are now selling them online; but they did not have them for sale yet. It took them another 2 weeks to acutally get it online. But they have been for sale for about 2 months now.

I wasn't going to get any, but after hearing how Blade used his, I have to try that. That was just too funny!image
  • I baught an uncut sheet of $2.00 notes over 2 years ago and when I was watching TV the other night (2 or so weeks ago) I saw the money show on TV hawking them for like $40.00 OVER what I paid from the mint.$89.00 plus S/H.

I think instead of folding and taping the sheet to use as wrapping paper would be a waste.

Why not just wrap the sheet in a box and throw away the paper. That would be a much better gift then a crumbled up sheet.

Something to watch for regarding these is people creating error notes out of these sheets and selling them on eBay for some pretty tidy sums. The full sheet notes all have serials starting with '9', and none of the circulating notes do...that's how you can tell the difference between a real miscut note and a pair of scissors to an uncut sold sheet. Just a tidbit of info..

  • There ARE circulating notes with serial numbers starting wih 9. Paper notes are printed in runs of 40,000 sheets and the serial numbers count DOWN as they are printed. This leaves one odd run of less than 40,000 sheets which they use for the highest numbers and they are used for the uncut sheet sales. the lowest serial number in the uncuts is I believe 99600000.
  • I like the miscut note idea...really creative...so few would ever know...
It's the "hunt" that makes this such a great hobby...
