PCGS coin numbering systems

Ok, what the heck is PCGS doing. I just subscribed to the PCGS population report, and lo and behold the coin ID numbers there are different than on their PCGS Price Guide. The "series number" isn't even the same. Anyone know the story here?

You're probably seeing an additional designation number added to the basic coin number. For example, a 1964 proof Kennedy would be 6800. If it is a CAM, it would be 86800, if a DCAM 96800.

EDIT: I think I see what you're talking about. The PCGS number isn't the same number as the coin/series number. The PCGS number's purpose (the number that appears in the pop reports) is for correctly entering and tracking submissions. The coin/series number is what is added to the slab label in addition to the PCGS number.

    Confused? I know I am.image

    Ok, an example.
    1995-S Civil War S$1 PR69DCAM Modern Commemorative

the slab reads "9701" - all the modern commemoratives in the population report begin with either "96" or "97" (not counting a preceeding 8 or 9 for cams)

In the PCGS Price Guide, this is listed as "Series 1002 - Coin #56"

Nowhere on the slab or the pop report is 1002 or 56 included.

    Still coinfused.

It won't appear in the pop report, since it isn't used in there; only the PCGS number is needed for pop purposes. If it is an earlier generation slab, it won't appear on it either. Only the newer generation slabs include it.
