1973-S Ike realized $5200 in NGC holder?

DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
This coin is holdered MS69. It is a one of a kind pop-top. Is the market for these NGC silver Ikes as impressive as it seems? Best I can tell, the Ike collectors have less concern about whose holder than they once did. It seems many of the ANACS coins are strong as well. Any thoughts?

  • Ikes are tough! I have been trying to get a set of ms65 Ikes for about 6 months. The silver Ikes are not difficult. Ms69 is almost non existent. I also dont think pcgs would give the coin an ms69.

That can`t be the MS69 Ike that was for $5,200 beans.I see ticks and stuff, but it could be that the picture appears so grainy.

  • Back a few months ago, I think at the Columbus, Ohio show, a PCGS PR70DCam sold for $4000. I think it was for a `72-s Silver. If you look around on Heritage, they should have it on record. So someone is probably hoping to do the same with this. Also being a unique top-pop I geuss you get to set the price and it depends if a buyer is willing to buy at that price.

  • It's a bargain compared to what the last couple 72-S (far easier in supergrades) NGC MS69s brought. image

I see ticks and stuff, but it could be that the picture appears so grainy.

I think most of that, the little shiny spots, are silver dust pounded into the coin. Which, technically, maybe doesn't influence the grade, but with a little market grading I think it would.

I'm amazed at what some of these NGC silvers have been bringing. Maybe because master marketer Rick Tomaska started selling them. image

If prices for the NGC coins hold, there may be some real opportunities for making some money. That same coin in a PCGS MS68 holder would probably bring $300 tops.

Again, I don't think the coin could go into a PCGS MS69 holder with today's PCGS grading standard. I even have some doubt that whether the coin could stay in a PCGS MS68 holder. image May be it could.

Tad mentions this same NGC MS69 $5,000.00+ coin would be a $300.00 coin in a PCGS MS68 holder. True. But, if it was PCGS MS69? -Double the NGC price tag.

So, is this "NGC MS69" really a "PCGS MS68.8"?

Would it sell for $5,000.00 raw?

Questions I don't have the answers for.

    Well, here ya go!

    1. But, if it was PCGS MS69? -Double the NGC price tag.

    Yes.

    2. So, is this "NGC MS69" really a "PCGS MS68.8"?

No. It's a PCGS MS68. The 0.8 may count with explosive grenades, but not explosive price jumps.

    3. Would it sell for $5,000.00 raw?

    Yes.*

  • I really need to crack out my PCGS MS68 and send it to NGC. If it went 69 I could realize a 2000% return.

Tad- If you would buy a "Grade Rarity" such as this Ike (a $5.00 coin in UNC- a "$5,000.00" coin holdered) RAW then you are a (much) better man than I.

    ::Whoops::!
I read the forums in the format that doesn't show ICONS or attachements- it loads quicker that way- and didn't see your photo!

    Understood.
(Tad, you did have me scared there for just a moment... also disregard my 'slight' on the Open Forum, regarding the bet, now...)

The part that has me stumped is this, if this coin would be a $300 coin in PCGS MS68, and if the NGC set registry competetion isn't driving NGC holdered coins to new highs, is it just the uniqueness of the holder grade? I like the coin alot, and would feel pretty sporty paying $200 for it raw. I guess any coin is worth what someone will pay for it, so it was worth $5200. BTW - do buybacks count as realized prices?

Q.Would it sell for $5000.00 in an ACG holder?
