2 different proof sets and weird pics - Help?

I received 2 proof sets I ordered today. Both were sealed.

The first is a 1964 proof set that has something wrong with the penny. It has a big chunk on the front and back that looks silver. Any ideas what it is?

Second was a 1987 proof set. Looks great except for the weird haze, toning?? The dime and quarter have the most. The other side is perfect. The half (not photoed) is starting to do the same as the dime and quarter, the nickle has a all over haze started, and the penny looks perfect. Any ideas what this is. Will this affect the grading?

Here are little photos. If you want to see bigger photos here is the link to where I have the large photos (you just click on the little photos to make them bigger)

Thanks!
Lori

Well, the 1987 set is a toning issue. I have sets from then that have the same look. Not sure totally about the 1964 one, though.

Oh, and it does affect grading to some degree. Very little haze is allowed in the very high grades (68-70)

It's just toning. The '64 looks a little unusual but the other is pretty common on the sets of the mid-80's.

  • I have two '89 sets that are doing the exact same thing. Mine look like more of a "haze" than a "tone", though. Not very attractive.

That '64 Lincoln is wicked. I've never seen toning like that. I hope some others look at this and offer another opinion; it's got to be something else.

  • Thats what I thought too on the penny. It is a solid silver color in that area on front and back. It looks so odd. I figured this was the best place to post this and hopefuly get an answer. Thanks for the help!

Lori, does your 64 cent look like this one. If so, it is pretty normal toning, but I think it is pretty. I have a soft spot for the toned moderns.

  • Yes it does but quite a bit more. If you go to the very large photos you can see more. It is very silver colored and blends right in with the rest of the color of the coin. I just never seen one listed like that on the board. Thanks.
