I am waiting for it to arrive as we speak. I emailed the seller asking about the set
my mail to him,
The reason I ask is that the Kennedy half in the picture is an accented hair. Worth a little more than a regular Kennedy half of the same year. Are you saying that all the sets you have are accented hair. I would be happy to bid but I am not sure as to which set I would be bidding. Thanks for your timely response and effort. Patrick
and he wrote back,
we looked at the coin set for sale and it's the Same as the picture shown. also we do have a refund policy of 14 days But we don't refund the shipping fees. that would be your cost both ways. hope this helps.
If it's not the same I'll NEG him as a deceptive seller. I got to damn many pos transactions anyway.
Maybe I'm missing something since it is early on a Monday morning, but what is wrong with this auction?

The set in the auction photo has an Accented Hair variety Kennedy, and they're concerned that since the auction says the item is an example of the actual item being sold, the actual set received may not have an AH Kennedy.

It's more than just this one. They use the same scan in every auction for their 1964 sets. They must be a hell of a lot luckier than I am when they're buying sets.
Thanks for the explanation. Now that I know what to look for I can be more choosy about buying a 64 Proof Set that I see.

<< <i>we looked at the coin set for sale and it's the Same as the picture shown >>
And then, when you receive a non-AH set they'll claim that what they meant by "the Same" was that there were five 1964 coins in the set. Sorry, I just can't give them the benefit of the doubt.
Russ,
I thought that picture looked familiar, but I couldn't find another one of their 64 proof set auctions (well, I didn't really look very hard).
As I said I haven't recieved the set yet. When I do I will let you know. If though it is not I will be leaving a Neg.It would be a first for me and I hope it is not necessary.
I think you must be referring to a different auction than the one I linked to in this thread. They seem to run the same auction every few days, so you probably won an earlier one.
Everyone,
Anyway... I thought I'd invest a few dollars as an experiment, just to find out for sure. I emailed the seller, asking this:
<< <i>Your auction states, "The item pictured is an example of the actual item being sold." Does this mean the item being sold will be of the same variety as the item pictured? >>
Notice I inquired about the "variety", without mentioning the AH. Since their name is "gatewestcoin", I'm assuming they deal in coins and should know what the term "variety" means.
Their response:
<< <i>Yes it will we might have a few of the same item for listing reason we use 1 photo. >>
I'm not trying to set the seller up, and I have no intention of negging them if I don't receive an AH set. I just HAD to find out! If I don't get an AH set I'll just mark it up to experience. I just hope it's a really nice set, regardless, because I paid WAY to much for a regular proof set. If it's not AH, I'll just email the seller and let them know it's not nice to try to fool people like that. I doubt if I'll even return it... not worth the hassle, I knew what I was getting into.
ClarkOfKent I didn't get an accented hair but the Kennedy I got in the set will be graded by NGC next week. The coin is as deep Cameo as any I have seen.I set it beside my PCGS graded Deep Cameo and I was thinking that this guy didn't know what he had.The strike is at least as good as My PCGS graded pr69. I hope you are as lucky.
After I made my last post, I remembered you posting about that cameo you received and went back and read the thread. I sure hope I do get lucky! Any chance of you posting a pic of yours?
Yes I am going to post it after I get it back.I'm walking it into NCS with a few others(30 or so). Then, since all I hear about PCGS going skitzo,NGC gets them. I still have 4 free submissions and to tell the truith I don't want to take a chance at them not wanting to update the pop reports.
I got a normal, average set. I guess they don't know what "same variety" means. I was just reminded of this auction, because I noticed they're still using the same picture with the Accented Hair.
I just purchased one of these sets last week, and now I see this thread. If not an accented hair Kennedy, then I too consider the dealers' tactic to be deceiving. What better way to get significantly higher bids on common '64 proof sets. I'll post when set arrives. As far as his title goes, "example of the actual item". Who are they kidding? I guess, ME!!!
I specifically asked the seller if the set for sale was of the same "variety" as the one shown, and was told that it was. I don't think the fact that they show an AH is a coincidence at all. Sure, they state that,
<< <i>The item pictured is an example of the actual item being sold. >>
, but I'm not convinced that when I asked about the "variety" that they didn't know exactly what I was talking about. Though they can justify their auction by the disclaimer, I think their email response to me was downright deceitful.
And if the picture had been a non-AH half set and you won it but received an AH half set would you complain that "you didn't get the same variety"? More likely Gatewest simply doesn't care about the AH variety and by "Example" they mean you will get a 1964 proof set. Period.
If the picture had been a non-AH half set I would not have bid, or I would have bid half of what I did.
I have no doubt that by "Example" they mean you will get a 1964 proof set. I also have no doubt that a coin dealer who has in excess of 36,000 eBay transactions knows what the term "variety" means, and is most likely aware of the difference between an AH and a non-AH. If they took it to mean the same year, or that it would be a proof set, then I still don't want to do further business with them... because they can't be trusted to know what they're talking about.
If you read one of my posts earlier in this thread, you'd know that I, and a couple of other forum members considered this an inexpensive experiment to see what we would receive.

Nobody got negged. I didn't return it, and I didn't email the seller. NO SELLER WAS HARMED IN THE POSTING OF THIS THREAD.
And, hopefully, we may have saved someone else from overbidding on what they thought was an AH set.
I just got my Kennedy from the proof set I bought back. Pr67 cam. I thought it would go Deep but I guess I was wrong. I will be contacting NGC on this.As well as a Pr 69 that should be cam.AND the more I look at MY PR67 FREAKIN "STAR"1959 FRANKLIN THE MORE I WANT TO SCREAM!!!!! But I digress. Even so,I think I am alright with the deal with the set I recieved from Gateswest.
As Clark stated, "it was an inexpensive experiment". I just received my set, and it too was a regular set, but it is high quality and non-cameo. The Kennedy half is brilliant and would easily go PF68, possibly 69 though I haven't looked at it that close. I never intended on negging the seller, or sending the set back, but I do beleive the seller has knowlege enough to know the difference between an accented hair Kennedy and the garden variety, and by showing the accented hair variety he is sure to get substantially higher bids on an otherwise common proof set.
