Opinions on 1918/7 d buff nickel

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,714 ✭✭✭✭✭
I had the opportunity to pickup a anacs (fine) graded 1918/7 d buffalo nickel yesterday for about $1400. What are your opinions on this coin and the price? Is this a good coin to get ahold of?

My concerns are with the fact that it is an error rather than a rare date/mm per-say and I'm not really an error collector.

You cannot go wrong with ANACS certified varieties. If its a popular variety in an ANACS holder, then
there is a market for it.

This thread slipped through the cracks amongst all the arguing. Let's give it another chance now.

    LanLord:

It is a variety (rather than an error) and a very important one in the series. I'm working on a Dansco of Buffs now in AU/BU, and that hole (and the 37-D 3-legger) scare me!

The price is pretty good -- but not exceptional. But I agree: LET'S SEE THE PIC! It could be a very nice price if the coin has eye-appeal, and a really clear date.

Also, what's the purpose? To complete a set? Just intrigued by the coin? These things weigh in, too.

    Just my thoughts. . . .

    LanLord,
I agree with BNE. That is as standard to that set as a 1955 DDO is to the Lincoln series. Probably a little less general appeal than the 3-legger, but essential for true Buff collectors. I am easing my way into the series and the 18/7 is definitely a key.

BNE - Just be glad they didn't leave a hole for the 1916 DDO - That is one expensive coin!

i can't believe the price is up that high on those! seems like i bought mine in a vg slab for about 500, granted that was a decade ago. are they really that high now? but it is always a great coin, & one you can NOT go wrong with. i'd say get it.

Sorry, didn't get a picture. I'll have another chance to pick it up in a month or two, gotta put away some major bucks before I do that. Instead of the 1918/7 what I did pick up were these, I don't think I did too bad, but I am obviously confused about what I want to collect.image
