I guess he is hoping no one will notice that giant dig under Morgan's eye? Or the ding on the throat?

How on earth can this be a top 10 coin? Are they all so baggy?

I would hope that it was a very light & shallow mark that the scanner light catches just the right was and makes it look worse and not really a giant dig.

I don't like my ladies beat up in the face. The rest doesn't look too good either. I know Dog97 the hair over the ear is there but with her throat cut what good is she?image

Must be "market graded" because well struck O mints are rare & valuable. That's why I don't like Market Grading.

Why does this face remind me of OJ Simpson. Rare or not, I would pass on this one. For considerably less money, you can pick up a gorgeous 83-0 in 66pl.

It is well struck for an O mint. I just looked at rev also.

Call me contrary if you will for a ms65 DMPL this one looks ok to me, based on the scan. I quit buying DMPLS via pictures a long time ago. Its impossible to tell how they will appear in person, the mirrors heighten any bag mark in a photo.
  • I think the coin is priced just about right - maybe a tad over but close. The population of ms65dmpl's for this coin is really low. For specialists of this type this wouldn't be a bad buy.

80 pieces graded is a fairly decent number. But to make it sound even rarer, claim it is in the top 10%. This is the 2nd biggest game in town after stating what the coin sold for in 1989 as an MS65 (when that coin could only grade 64). My new thumbrule is that since nearly every dealer/seller now has coins in the 10% of the spectrum, then 90% of the sellers are stretching the truth. Frankly,
if a coin is in the top 10% it is a bonafide upgrade candidate and at some point will most likely upgrade. And that 10% line keeps moving due to gradeflation. After a period of time, the remaining top 10% of the coins in that grade look so much better than the average ones, they'll probably make the next grade eventually too. The cylce keeps on moving. image

I agree with IrishMike that it's ok. Not PQ but ok. BTW the wacked PCGS price guide lists it at $620. The smudge over by M in UNUM is what bothers me the most. I see a little dip retone on the high areas. It has taken it 10 years to retone that little bit but what will it look like in another 10? When I see the old green holder Morgans that were slabbed in the generous years of the mid/late 90's I always ask myself "What would it grade today if I cracked it out and resubmitted it raw?" I'd be leaving that one in the holder.
As far as the dealers hype I just ignore it because I know what the pops are.

I agree the mirrors magnify the marks in a photo. They also do the same in person. And every mark will sometimes stand out like a sore thumb. But for me I don't give it slack for these reasons. I've seen plenty of these in person and many will be all marked up but will be graded high for the mirrors and cameo effect, which I like these effects but will not pay the money unless it's all there. This is just how I look at it.
