Will the rare coin market?

Will the rare coin market die a slow death because all the really nice coins in all series will be hoarded away in collections; never to be seen again? This was a comment made by a dealer today at a smallish coin show in Des Moines. Your thoughts.

  • I don't think so. First of all, there are always new rarities, new interests, new issues to be had. Secondly, old collectors die and their collections get dispersed. Third, collectors might see something else they would rather have, so they will sell some or all of their holdings and push their collecting interests in another direction. I think all sorts of new stuff comes up all the time, maybe not as often as we would like, and not at the price that we would be willing to pay, but if you're persistent, more often than not you will see stuff come up that you've been waiting for. Just a matter of can you afford it!?!

I think there are many more really nice coins out there than anyone knows. And collections continuously come up for auction. As people decide to liquidate, or others inherit collections, those coins become available. I've noticed that some auctions are for collections which were only started a decade or so ago, so I wonder if they might be coming available more frequently instead of less.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

The number of collections coming to auction has been quite large in the past year. Seems to be no end in sight. I thought only Heritage or Goldberg's put out those 1" fat auction catalogs. Now B&M is doing it too. Lots of coins. Are there enough buyers to absorb it all? Collections are always being recycled. I think that what you saw with Pittman, Eliasberg, Norweb where collections were off the market for decades will be far and few between. Collections are being built in shorter time frames and being sold once the goal is met. They are also more specialized than ever.

Keep in mind... rare means rare... these coins are not easily found... that's why we all try to collect them.

What effect would this have on smaller dealers if the supply of really nice (tho not rare) coins shrinks? Will they be able to stay in business selling what he called lower grade or junk coins?

    absolutely POSITIVELY DEFINATELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

........... really rare coins are not all that rare in fact really common tons of rare slabbed coins out there coins are not rare!!!! rare coins are not rare!!

    to add to that

i mean if you only knew what is still out there yet to be found and not even slabbed

it makes all the coins alreasy in slabs look like a small pond a small private backyard pond compaired to a huge lake of coins

also the coin game is always in a state of flux and everyone with all this mass communication and internet is always buying and selling more and more

collections are always coming on the market everyday and always will!! day in day out even the finest known slabbed sets

    sincerely michael

Also if demand stays the same or goes up while supply goes down, prices go up to a point where people sell, etc... the supply-demand-price cycle.
