J.S. Whats the difference between flow lines and die cracks? The lines go on angle from the bottom right to the top on the obverse with no lines on the reverse. There are no signs of the 1 on the 1787.
Die cracks are caused by a crack in the striking die and will leave a line on the coin that protrudes above the surface. Flow lines are made on every coin struck because at the split second of striking the pressure of the strike causes enough heat for the surface of the coin to melt. The surface of the coin flows out from the upraised center to the edges and gives it luster---cartwheels when you tilt the coin in good light. It could be a grease filled die that struck the coin. If a die has grease on it then some of the details will disappear on the coin. Is anything else missing on the details, especially around the one?
Oreville:It's foolish of me to try to tell the forum members about the odd looking coins I pick up along the way because it difficult for the members to know exactly what I have.I will not do this anymore untill I get someone over here to show me how to post pictures of what I have. Then I'll post everythng I don't understand about coins I fine.I thank everyone who has giving me feedback.
Dave:there isn't anything else missing around the1. I just noticed very fine lines going across the 798 and there is a very slight impression of the 1.The lines are at a slight angle. All the lines on the obverse and the reverse are straight as an arrow. The other odd feature is the coin is very dull and darker the others I have.

Sounds like something different I would hang on to it for now.

The lines are either die polish or post mint damage.
