A couple pickups today - answers below

I picked up a couple half dollars today. The scan of the 1872 doesn't do it justice, it has deep blue around the rim and the top of liberty and pink, red and orange around the lower part of liberty. Really looks much nicer than the scans. I'm not sure why the colors don't pick up well in the scanner, but they sure are pretty.

  • just a couple of pickups!!!???

Man, I'd hate to see what you come up with when you really put your mind to getting some coins!

Wonderful examples! - They're proofs correct?

    1872------PR65
    1880------PR63 w/T2 reverse.
both are sweet coins, especially the 1872 with nice frost on the obverse.

Okay, here are the grades, pictures below. The 1872 is a Proof62, I think it's graded a bit tough as there is only one small mark in the field to the right of liberty. The 1880 is an MS64! I couldn't believe it was MS when I first saw it, I thought perhaps incorrectly graded. If DMPL was awarded to something other than Morgans, this one would get it. It's got incredible mirrors on both sides. The front has two parallel lines to the right of libertys knee, the back has a couple marks to the left of the eagle. It was only the rims that gave away the fact that this one is an MS not a Proof.

edited cuz I don't know left from right

I'm not familiar with the type 1 or 2 reverese, can someone go into the details? Would this still hold for an MS not a Proof?

Only a 62 for the `72 ? .Well ,Its a really nice looking 62.A potential upgrade perhaps on that one.

Funny how some bussiness strikes look exactly like Proofs sometimes.
That was a little curve ball you through in there....forgot to check the rim....image

  • 1880 MS pieces offen come looking like their proof counterpart. I know this is true for seated dimes. Same thing for 79 & 81

the T1/T2 has to do with the berry over the "h" in half on the reverse. i may have it mixed up, but if you look at the 1880 the berry is pointed and if you look at the 1872 it's split. i guess they changed dies in 79 or 80 which is when the variety is noted. nice coins.

  • Interesting. What led me to believe that the 80 was a proof is among other things the edge looks very squared. I've heard tell that there is a great deal of difficulty discerning whether these latter date SL Halves are MS or PR. The MS halves are more valuable than the PR ones so you should be glad then!

Yes, even though the edge is nice and sharp, it's not as square as the Proof (72). That is really the only thing that makes me think it's a business strike, otherwise it really looks like it could be a Proof. I guess because of the low mintage, the dies stayed in really good condition and therefore alot of prooflike coins were produced.
