Any info on the Wright Brothers Commem?

Does anyone have any information on what the coins are going to look like and how many/denominations? Maybe a projected release date and price? Thanks!

  • Not yet. I don't think the Mint has done a press release on that yet but you could look around their website.

I wouldn't be surprised if it looked something like the attached graphic.
  • Wow, I didn't realize that they were going to be $10 Golds. One just assumes they would be $5. Excellent.

Prepaid coins orders begin on Aug. 1, 2003 per this US Mint web page
  • If you think about it,Those are some pretty heavy hitters that are being commemorated.

last i heard was that the obverse common design was set but they had scrapped the three reverse designs. that was in the october 22nd NN and the article also stated that the realease date would be the same. should be a hot selling coin.

probably around twice the price of the $5 gold coin @ $225 therfore in the neighborhood of $400 to $450 would be my guess (that is mint price not after market)

2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coins

The year 2003 marks the 100th anniversary of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s historic flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

By Act of Congress, and in honor of this historic event, the United States Mint will produce a series of gold, silver and clad commemorative coins. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these coins is authorized to be paid to the First Flight Foundation for purposes of repairing, refurbishing, and maintaining the Wright Brothers Monument on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and for purposes of expanding (or, if necessary, replacing) and maintaining the visitor center and other facilities at the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, including providing educational programs and exhibits for visitors.

Public Law 105-124 states that the design on the coins “shall be emblematic of the first flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.” These coins will be offered in both proof and uncirculated condition. The Law also authorizes the Mint to produce not more than 100,000 gold ten-dollar, 500,000 silver one-dollar and 750,000 clad half-dollar coins.

The Secretary of the Treasury has been authorized to accept prepaid coin orders before the issuance date of August 1, 2003.

Please visit our website regularly for updates on the First Flight Commemorative Coin Program and announcements regarding the official on sale date.
