The days of looking through a 5X loop and declaring, "Yepsters, sure enough looks like reeeeaaaaal toning to me!" are over.

Why can't a coin be determined to have real or artifical toning via the "CSI" way of research and discovery?

Maybe too invasive to get a accurate determination? From what I understand toning is mainly oxidation of the coins and to confirm that, you would need a decent sample from the coin. Even if a blow torch was used to accelerate the oxidation, I don't know if you would be able to detect it. Chemical residue maybe, but lots of bucks (several hundred dollars) per sample and you would need to be invasive with the coin.

The reason why is because technically all toning is real. The true question about toning should be is it accelerated or natural. Any toning is just chemical oxidation which occurs over time and builds layers upon layers of color on a coin. Natural toning can be evident because these colors are soft and deep but yet brilliant in color. They always seems to "dig" into the surface. The boundaries between colors are usuallydefined but mixed with the each other. Chemical analyses on either natural or accelerated toning will yield the same results because the same compounds create both occurances. In these cases, experience is truly the best tool.
