Halloween Trick or Treats

Lucys post started to make me think. Last year I just gave out Circulated State quarters. Some were probably MS but when your a kid its just money. What would be cool and not too terribly more expensive than quarters or candy for that matter would be cull, AG or G Buffs or dig out a couple hand full of early date Lincoln's in good. A bowl filled with some starter coins by all of us could do coin collecting a good boost. Give an incentive to the collectors of tomorrow. I think I am going to have 2 bowls. 1 with some nice old coins and one with candy as an experiment.

Someone gave me the idea of combining candy with coins. A dealer I know gives out a little bag with candy and 2 old coins & 1 new coin, usually a steel penny, a buf nickel and state quarter. I also think he gives away a free state quarter map coupon inside some of the baggies. Smart marketing, get the kids started with a quarter and a map. I think its a great idea if you can buy steel pennies and buf nickels by the pound.

  • Do you really want to attract that attention to yourself or your home? Now a days you get the "middle aged adolecent" trick-or-treater (age say 14 or so). Im sure they would wonder why some guy in giving out all these "OLD & RARE" coins.

KoinKollector makes a very good point. Years ago a senior member of the local coin club used to give out coins instead of candy and it almost turned tragic. Being a collector and dealer for years he had more miscellaneous coins than he know what to do with. So he started to give them out as Halloween Treats and at first it was a pretty good idea.
He had been doing it for 3 years when 2 adults and two youths , all in costume, came to his door. When he opened his door one adult pushed his way in and the other pulled out a gun. One said something to the affect of "We don't want the junk you're giving out but the good stuff". He tryed to tell them that what was lefted of his collection was at the bank in a safety deposit box. After his wife passed away he started to slowly sell off his collection. They didn't believe him so beat him with the gun. Then they quickly ransacked the house. Hearing some trick or treaters coming they ducked out the back door. Good thing for his gentleman another member of the club came along, found him and called the police.
These crooks were never caught. At first the police felt some other member of the club did this, someone who knew what coins he had in his collection. Yet we all knew he kept his coins the at the bank and not at home.
He now lives in another state with his son. No ONE gives out coins any more.

SO PLEASE USE CAUTION IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO SO .

After that story I've decided to hand out cucumbers....I'll just tell 'em to go away and make a salad!
