    65.
  • I've been through a large amount of Sacagawea dollars from rolls, bags, and mint sets. The official 2002 US mint rolls have been 63 or less, typically 60 or 61. Lots of contact on the cheeks, baby's forehead, the pappoose blanket, and the right eyebrow. Also, the US mint rolls have had lots of rim dings. The upside is that they usually don't have counting wheel contact, and there are a few gems for every few rolls (65 or 64). I have yet to find anything better than a low 65 from them. The Phillys have been the worst - lots of spots, dings, and poor strikes.

The US mint bags are generally better - especially if they haven't been tossed around alot. Since they are in bags, there tend to be more contact marks, but since Sacagaweas don't have reeded edges, the contacts are gentler than Kennedys or quarters. Often the average coin from the bags is about 64, also lots of 63s.

Without doubt, I've had the most success in finding Gem (65) and above in official mint sets. Although every Sac from mint sets isn't contact free or spot free, the large majority are 64 or better. Every 68, 67, and 66 I've gotten have all been from mint sets. I've even gotten a blush-toned Sacagawea from a Philly mint set.

On balance, the money you have to spend on 2002 MS Sacagaweas to get good gems is best spent on mint sets. Since the only other channel is the Mint rolls and bags, the dollar premium per gem found is much lower with mint sets (and you get to look for FS Jeffs, MS Quarters, Cooler non-circulating Kennedys, and the occasional Lincoln that's nice!)

    I hope this helps!

  • Yep, what's been said for 2002 regarding rolls (terrible) and mint sets (sometimes nice).

Strangely, when they were initially released in 2000 the situation was completely reversed.

Recently I have purchased around six 2002 P & D Sacs on Ebay, all PCGS, all mintstate

The average prices I paid were as follows

    PCGS-66 $8-12/piece
    PCGS-67 $15-30/piece.

The difference is very clear. I think the mintages will be small for 2002 and 2002 may be the last
year of issue for this soon to be oscolete series. , I think.
