Walking Half SPECIALIST:I need advice?

Question:

Dealers specializeing in Walkers seem to sell Proof "white" for more?

Does this mean that toneing is bad?

Is ANCS proof grades about the same as PCGS?

I do not own a Walker but will need to purchase one for type set.

Thanks for your help!

It means they think it's bad. What they think really doesn't matter, it's what you think that counts. My personal opinion is that, when it comes to proof coinage, white is generally better because for me it has more eye appeal. But, I have seen some colorfully toned proofs that were VERY beautiful.

I think when they are asking more for a "white" proof, they are comparing it market-value wise to the less desirable forms of toning, IE: not colorful, but drab. A very colorful naturally toned coin will bring more than a white one.

Bottom line is, that you will be living with the coin. If you like it, screw what anybody else thinks.

As far as ANACS grading compared to PCGS, I don't know. I haven't bought enough ANACS slabs to offer a valid assessment of that. There are quite a few people here who have, though, so one should be along shortly.

One last thing; Proof Walkers are STUNNING.image

  • Thanks guys for your thoughtful answers..I received this email from an Ebay seller(ANY THOUGHTS)

    ((((PF66 Walker
My personal experience is that though Anacs is sometimes
more linient on Mint state coins they usually are tougher on proof coins above
PF65 than either PCGS or NGC. That is why you see very few proof coins with
high grades PF66 to PF69 in Anacs holders. They are usually cracked out or
never sent to Anacs to begin with becuase they are tougher on proofs.
That said however, as you know the grading game is sometimes anybody's guess at
these services. I purchased the coin in the holder. It is a nice original coin
and I didn't intend to mess with though a think It would look even more
attractive if it was professionally dipped.)))))

    Gary,

I don't know how much of his response is BS, but one thing I can comment on:

<< <i>That is why you see very few proof coins with high grades PF66 to PF69 in Anacs holders. >>

In my main series, proof Kennedy halves, that is true. I've rarely ever seen one in an ANACS holder grader higher than PR65. There may be some validity to his assertion that ANACS is tough on proofs.

    Gary,

I will often pay more for attractively toned pieces than for "white ones". Different buyers have different preferences.

Also, I think it can be dangerous to generalize about whether ANACS, PCGS or NGC grades the same as or different from the others. One service might be stricter (or looser) than the others a majority of the time, but that doesn't necessarily have ANY relevance when discussing a specific coin you are thinking about buying.
