I couldn't believe what I got in my change the other day

O.K. it might not be worth much and it wasn't even a coin...I'm talking about the stuff that folds. I usually check my change closely and through the bills in my wallet without looking at them. The only reason I even noticed this one was because the seal was a different color. I noticed that I had a five dollar silver certificate from the 50's. I couldn't believe one of these was still in circulation. I just thought I'd share because I have never gotten a silver certificate as change before and it gave me a rush.

Cool! I have to check my hard currency more often!
  • My favorite local coin dealer gives out silver certificates in change when something is purchased at his shop. He uses Kennedy's and Sacs as well. Kinda cool really! image

nwcs, I WISH we could check our hard currency more: Hard Currency is either Gold or Silver COINS! Paper money is soft money.

  • I think when the economy is down, people dig out their stash of cash, and start spending the old notes that have been tucked away for ages. During the recession in the 80's my brother in law worked at a store, and people would bring in buckets of 64 JFK's to buy their groceries. He made a killing buying those coins out of the register.

I was at a local coin dealer the other day and someone came in with a small stash of coins and money trying to sell to the dealer. Of course, the dealer cherrypicked the collection to death, and the person had some circulated silver certs. (and other silver coins like worn down morgans and barbers) and the dealer told her to just spend them. I bit my tongue hard, especially after overhearing the price the dealer was offering for the cherried coins, and thankfully the lady said "I'll have to think about it" and took her stuff and left. I looked to see if I could catch her outside *to say don't come back and don't spend it* but no luck. I hope she thought it over good and hard and said no. Well, they might not be worth much but even junk silver is worth at least 3x face and the certs are worth a little over face anyway. Even if the dealer didn't want them, advising her to spend it is just bogus. Maybe give to a kid or something but spend them?? This is where people get these ideas. Once, while cashiering at my previous job, someone cashed in a roll of circulated walkers and franklins for face value!!!
  • If you look at the red book, look up the bullion value of your old worn out silver. In a lot of cases, the bullion price is worth way more than you could ever expect to get from a coin in AG. I dump more Bullion silver than I care to admit. Only thing that I hope for when I sell the junk, is that it does go for bullion or some artsy fartsy thing. If all the old junk was out of circulation, quality coins would be more desireable.

When I buy old family collections, I am obliged to take the good with the bad. I don't even fool with junk. Dump and go!

    Just my opinion!
