whats your oninion on this 1858 Half

Do you like the looks of this 1858 half?
I have not sent it out for grading yet
I would also like some thoughts as to how it should grade.
It has good lustre. Does cartwheels like my ms morgans.

BTW the back was taken over a piece of white typing paper.

Sorry man, that's not luster, that cleaning. There's way too much wear on it to have any luster left...you'll almost never find any luster on a coin below XF45. That to me is a VF30ish coin, and that may be a bit generous (I'm not that familiar with the series). It'll probably be bagged at PCGS or NGC, and net graded at ANACS. Pity too, because I like the toning, and it looks to have a pretty sharp strike, especially on the reverse.

XF45-AU50. The reverse looks to be very weakly struck. I like the blue toning. Mike image

Looks like nice xf details, although the diaganol marks/scratches from Liberty's shoulder through the shield indicate a wiping at one time. Nice original album toning too. I agree the piece looks, from the scan anyway, that it would get bagged by pcgs or ngc. Pretty coin.

clearly a weakly struck coin. the obverse striations may be planchet damage prior to striking, but overall, i don't trust that coin as MS. i'd be thinking "XF+" on that 1. i do like the toning on it.

    Darn slide open albums.
Must have been opened too many times before I could remove this one from the album.
Atleast The marks were barely noticable until I took the picture.
My digicam loves to make even the slightest detail come right out.

I still cant believe that this coin is so reflective that it made the background for the reverse appear to be very dark. It was a nice bright white piece of typing paper.

Cleaned but still a very nice coin, just wait till it finishes toning it will be a monster.

This is the only toned silver coin I have.

For some reason my coins dont like to tone except my modern proofs and my pennies
The proofs get hazy and develop spots the pennies turn brown.
The silver coins did get what appears to be a layer of dust on them after 5 years in storage.

    Am I doing something wrong?

I have them all stored in pvc free plastic 2x2's
then in a binder page the type that has 4x5.
And finaly in a safe with a good suply of decisant.

Nice look to it. Might be a horizontal scratch by the knees.
    Compare this reverse to yours.

This is a decent piece where all the diagonal "scratches" on the obverse are from the weak striking." Die scratches. The weak strike makes detecting the wear that much tougher. I do detect some minor rubbing on the lower drapery folds and on the eagle's left upper wing area. The tiny "pock" marks in the field are consistent with circulation and maybe a cleaning. I've seen coins with similar strike problems grade as high as MS66. I think the coin is a pretty AU55 to 58. It is definitely not XF though to some the strike may lower it to that level in their opinion.

Roadrunner, when you say "die scratches" are you refering to scratches on the planchet that weren't pressed out by the die? I ask because I've always heard the term used to describe scratches on the die that were imparted to the coin when it was fully struck up in that area rather weakly struck.

I dont collect the series but is the "1" repunched? I would also agree the coin was cleaned, long ago and grading somewhere between AU50-AU55. I like the coin image

I,d also note the rim of the coin.
    Its in remarkable shape.
The eagles left wing(on the right) is well enough struck, but the left wing and adjacent letters ED ST,are weak.
Or its a weird wear pattern.image

The diagonal scratches look like planchet striations to me too.

Looks to have AU details; design weakness appears to relate to strike - notice the central weakness and striations correspond to the high points.

Toning looks original, but, I don't know what to make of what looks like surface damage or pitting on right side of obverse.

This is a coin I would like to hold to tilt and rotate to see if it was indeed cleaned, which was my gut reaction. If not cleaned xf. Still I agree with Mark, I like the coin.

    What is a repunched 1?
I am not that familiar with these things yet.
    Thanks
