Maybe PCGS isn't to tough, maybe the others guys are too lax!

I think this is the case, at least on 20th Century mint state circulating strike coins. The other companies tend to be a 1/2 to a full point over generous with their grading. Some, as I am sure everyone knows are much worse than that. PCGS IS NOT PERFECT, but if I had to buy a coin sight unseen, I would buy a PCGS slabbed coin first. I suspect that is why so many coins won't cross over. There are certainly exceptions, ANACS doesn't like to give out to many gem grades for brown Lincolns. NGC is supposedly tougher on Full Step Jeffersons, although I cannot personally testify to the last remark. So much PCGS bashing lately, I thought I would stand up for them a bit. mdwoods

    Mark,

I don't think Hoot's thread is about differing grading standards. I don't think he was complaining that PCGS is too strict when compared to the other services. I think what he was upset about was the politicizing of the grading process -- especially wrt crossovers.

So, if the PCGS bashing that you're talking about is due to that thread, then I think you're off-topic.

So would I if it's graded in the last year or so - than I know it's most likely undergraded. All I have to do is compare my earlier PCGS slabs to my current ones, and it becomes obvious. (In the proof Kennedy series).

Don't worry, Russ! In about a year, when the new yellow inserts come out you'll be able to sell those pretty blue insert coins for a premium to all the starving crack out artists! image

I think the word alleged should be added to that statement. If so many coins are not crossed slabbed, but are graded as high when submitted raw, why would people keep submitting them slabbed? Why not buy all the NGC coins you can and break them out and resubmit them to PCGS. That only makes sense since PCGS slabs seem to command a premium. So I must repectfully disagree, I think it was a bashing of PCGS, I was trying to explain why the crossovers were not as successful as people hoped they would be. Not because of politics, but because the coins don't make the grade. Mark

I don't like arguing about the Coke vs Pepsi issue anymore... I do, however, like to see others arguing about it!

You do have to admit that there is quite a bit of humor seeing all this back-n-forth, but with nothing new whatsoever...

Well, I have to agree with you. Pepsi is my favorite when I drink carbonated beverages. But NGC does have ugly slabs.....image

On the issue of the slabs themselves, I prefer a hybrid.

I like the stacking grooves and stuff that PCGS slabs have. I also like their serialization system.

I like the white cores of the NGC slabs -- most of my coins are toned silver. Black cores would be nice for gold.

I like the top-label from SEGS.

I like the small size of the ANACS holder. Why waste all that space and weight on plastic?

    Maybe I can try PGS?

Since when was there an arguement? There are no valid arguements to be had on this point. Coke is definitely best! image

if I had to buy a coin sight unseenfrom the point of view of this being a hobby, you have hit the crux of the problem, stated in those nine little words.

the issue is whether or not you (not you personally, but in general) should be buying coins sight-unseen to begin with. if you do not see a coin before you buy it, how is it possible to know whether you will like it or not? i mean, whether a company is lax or not is not relevant! you are buying coins that THEY like according to THEIR standards. the issue of coke vs pepsi just doesn't do it for me, because i just don't think the root of the issue is one company's standards versus anothers.

of course, from a business standpoint, everything changes, and the coke vs pepsi challenge does become relevant.
