Large scans here:

1870 Two Cent piece obverse.

1870 Two Cent piece reverse.

I think it's a solid EF40, maybe 45, but I'm concerned about the rim damage at 12 o'clock on the reverse, as well as a thin coat of dirt in some areas. What do you guys think?

NOTE: Scan has been lightened 20% to show detail.

  • Looks like it may have surface problems as well , but without the rim damage, I agree with xf40-45.If the surfaces are what Im seeing, then downgrade a few notches. JMO

I agree that the porosity would be more damaging than the little ding... the details look right for XF

  • Russ, a little dirt can be a good thing and can attest to originality. But it kind of depends on the context. If it's more like finger grime from old time use that's a good thing. If it looks like it was just dug up out of someones yard then not a good thing. That rim damage is kind of a bummer, but overall I could expect one to look a lot worse.

    jcping,

What makes you think it's cleaned?

detail appears to be solid XF, but probably not higher. agreed w/ micro-porosity, and w/ the uneven color, i'm inclined to believe someone has attempted to clean off the discoloration.

i think it is an underrated date in the series, but then again, the whole darned series is underrated.
