I Found Buried Treasure at my Local Dealer's Coin Shop

I decided to take some time off work today to pay a visit to my local dealer. They are an older couple and he is about to retire as he cannot see so well anymore. Well, I needed a few things and browsed through his circs and picked up some indian head pennies and other goodies for my son's Christmas stocking. I was just looking at his shelves as I always do (..i've only been their once before lol) and I came upon this old colorful typeset.

I looked harder at it and thought it was pretty neat. It had a price of $49.75 but gosh darn it I didn't have enough cash on hand for it. Fortunately, I had my checkbook with me (... I never carry it but I was doing bank errands for my wife today) so I gave him all but $5 so I could eat at 7/11 and paid the rest with a check.

Anyways, I was really amazed at some of the pieces in this set!! It seems like some recent widow decided to cash out her late husband's little collection and didn't pay too much attention, or didn't really care, as to what was actually in there.

Here are some of the highlights:

Neatly toned Franklin:imageThe Morgan, 64 Kennedy, Merc, and Washington Quarter are toned the same color purple on their reverse. Others are toned somewhat to that color but mixed with olive greenish-yellow. The set has a carboard backing not unlike a picture frame which you can set on a table.

Uncirculated Indian Head Cent:image

My Fav -- Toned Jefferson WW2 Nic:image

Neat toning on this Roosevelt: image

And this Barber Dime (a little dark on the Barber but thats OK): image

And last but not least (....drumroll please...) a 1972 Double Die Lincoln!: imageimageimage

Man I couldn't believe it!! All this for less than $50 bucks! That was my neatest find of the year so far but I have just started collecting a couple months ago after a few decades hiatus. Anyway I was really amazed! image

Are you certain that's a DDO? I'm sorry but I don't see it.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • Congratulations on your nice find. As for the lincoln, I believe that if it IS a DDO, it might be one of the lesser versions. Here's a picture of one of the more pronounced varieties for that date.

Your set is still extremely nice - I hope you can enjoy it for a long time!

The '72DD in the typeset is definately a less-pronounced variation and goes for far less than what is quoted in Redbook, at least according to eBay auctions. Maybe worth a few bucks or so. It is difficult to see without a loupe. I never had a DD of any variation before so it is neat to have one in my collection.

Awesome! Man, that's a great find. Are you keeping it or selling it?

Thanks for the pos comments on this set!! I will keep it for a while then I will sell it as a complete set, hopefully to a forum member that would like to have some neat toned pieces and cannot afford to spend alot of $$. I won't change a thing about it because all the pieces have been sitting in this thing for a long time as evident by the toning. Also the toning on each piece matches each other with respect to color and shades. I reversed the Franklin and the Jefferson nickel in their holders so this is what the back toning looks like with many of the pieces. The Morgan, 64Kennedy, and merc all have choice reverse toning that looks like the Franklin. Even the piece dollar looks good although mottled a bit. But all have very interesting and neat colors.

Even with that being a so-called "Poor Man's" DDO, if in fact it is, I'd say that little find made the whole purchase worthwhile. Nice find. image

I not long ago discovered an entire red BU roll of 1972 Die #3 DDO cents, and I got them at the regular 1972 cent price.

Actually, I think I got that roll for free, as a bonus when I bought a BU roll set of Memorials. The seller knew what they were. But he (and I) just assumed (wrongly!) that they were not worth much of a premium. I gave many of them away as freebies over the subsequent years, until somebody on the eBay chatboard enlightened me. Y'see, back in the late 70's, when I started collecting, we called 'em "Poor Man's Doubled Dies" and they fetched a dollar or so if you were lucky. By 1999-2000, I was getting $10-15 for them raw. And one guy I sold some to submitted some to ANACS for the variety designation, and he got as high as 75 bucks a pop for some of them! image
