Since there have been a few Ike posts in the last few days, I thought those who collect these boys would like a look at this coin that just closed on teletrade.

1972S NGC MS 69......yes MS69!

  • Wow! It's gorgeous. Isn't the realized price a tad high, though?

I have no idea what a MS69 would sell for in PCGS plastic, and the coin is truly a stunner. It's way past my Ike budget. My entire clad collection in MS65 (silvers in MS67) was around $1000.image

If this coin could cross-over to PCGS holder, I won't surprise its value will be doubled.

  • The price would likely more than double in a PCGS holder. There are three PCGS MS69 of the date, and any of those would probably bring that if brought to market today, even though they were arguably graded under a bit looser standards than currently.

There was another NGC MS69 on TeleTrade a while back. This one looks nicer than I remember that one to be (it had a tick by the eye).

Still, there is some surface rub on this one readily visible if you use the DjVu view... specifically some vertical scuffs on the neck just below the ear, the leg of Y in LIBERTY, and just a touch in the hair.

That's being picky, but if I was paying $2600 for the easiest MS Ike in high-grade, I'd be very picky. image Especially since you can get a very premium MS68 for a tenth the price.

But if you've got the dough to spend, there's no denying it's a beautiful example of an Ike from what I can see in the photo. I don't see any scuffs in the usual culprit places, like the base of the neck above the intials, or on the upraised eagle wing, or eagle head, or really anywhere. Nice!
  • I would call this a 68*. Looks like a few minor marks in the hair below the part, one at the hair at the base of the neck, and maybe something behind the eye. Other than that, extremely clean, but not quite a 69.

Thats an awful grainy shot to get a truely accurate grading.Nevertheless,it does appear to be ultra-clean on the whole. As for a crossover to PCGS,I,d think out of 100 `trys` 96 of those would be 66-68s.
Teletrade seems to unload alot of overgraded /maxed -out- for- their- grade coins.Or I just have seen that in the past.

given the appearance of the two in the scans, it's hard to justify the jump in price for the grade point. i wonder how they would look side by side in hand or same camera, lighting etc. as tad said, there are many nice ike's for this date out there. how to discern the 69 from the 68 is a task i don't envy anyone. all i know for sure myself is that when i'm looking through all the blue-packs i can pretty much tell what will make at least MS67. you gotta figure that at the point where ANY coin takes the big price jump relative to the grade it had better be a certainty. this is that magical point and it doesn't look all that clear to me.
