I think Loki was right, another Ebay scammer?

Sorry, I haven't spent the time to learn to link yet but Loki mentioned this sale yesterday and I believe he was right.

I did some checking and learned that, like the other Ebay scammer of the 1858 dime from yesterday, this guy also lives in Canada (nothing against Canadians!). He is also a first time seller of just one coin, just signed up, and in response to a question that I had someone send to him, replied that he wanted to arrange for some type of quick payment through a transfer. I notified the high bidder and learned that 3 or 4 other people had notified him of potential trouble as well.

This stinks!

1798 BUST $1 NTC XF40+ *B-17; RARITY
Item # 1391787574

Edited to reflect my newly acquired skill in linking - thanks to those who helped me with it.

    Linkified.

I just dropped him a quick eMail:

I searched the yahoo auctions for 1798 and didn't find a match.

Six hours to go and this thing is up to $960. Of course, no answer to my eMail.

I have the following email all set to go out to the winning bidder and all other bidders as soon as the sale ends :

    Dear bidder,

I sincerely hope this is not necessary. But the timing, type of listing and the fact that it is a new seller of the item you bid on, reminds me of a listing that was taken down from Ebay the other night because the seller did not own the coin listed and had used someone else's images.

Also, both sellers (if they are indeed different people) apparently live in Canada, though the information listed on their listings shows otherwise. Additionally, someone else contacted the seller and this is what the seller wrote back: "dear sir, i am looking for a fast transaction and if you agree to pay the money transfetr fees trough western union i will pay the shipping and handling costs trough UPS 2 days air. " It sounds very fishy to me and the nature of that reply from the seller does not match the sophistication of his listing information. Either the listing information was taken from elsewhere or the reply was purposely written to sound unsophisticated.

I am not some guy trying to mess with a legitimate seller's auction, but felt caution was advised, under the circumstances. I am happy to provide you with my Ebay feedback (of more than 100 transactions, all with positive feedback) if you'd like to see it.

I hope all of this is for nothing but just in case, I would advise you to be extremely careful to make sure you do not pay for something and then not get it or get something different than listed.

    Sincerely,
    Mark

I've seen this coin before. There was mention of it in the forums somewhere...

coinguy, isn't it against E-bay rules to send e-mails to someone from an auction other than yours?

LordM - it was mentioned/first brought up by Loki in the thread about the Ebay scammer who was offering the 1858 PCGS PR65 Cameo dime the other day.

It's funny how many "experienced" ebayers are bidding on this scam. They really should know better.

    mbbiker,

I freely admit that I do not know precisely what the Ebay rules are in this instance. However, I am waiting until the auction ends, not trying to get bidders not to bid on something I want, not trying to sell anything to anyone and am legitimately trying to prevent what I suspect (with good reason) to be a potential scam.

In each instance I have done this in the past, I have been correct and have "hurt" no one other than the potential scammers. If Ebay has a problem with me for doing this, I am willing to suffer the consequences for what I beleive to be a good cause.

You know as well as I that this is an outright scam, but there is no hard evidence of the fact like there was with the other scam you uncovered. I believe that for every one of these caught, at least 10 go undetected until it is too late. IMO, we should confine ourselves to worrying about these suspect listings to our own forum and if our "detective" work uncovers something tangible, only then should we contact eBay or potential victims. I hate to see someone get snookered and to see it unfold but really what can you do without subjecting yourself to NARU or worse, a lawsuit from a legitiment seller who has a suspect listing.

    Mark,

That e-mail can get you suspended from eBay if someone complains about it. However, as a first offense you'd likely only get a warning. You can accomplish the same end without the risk of eBay's ire by using an e-mail address other than the one you have registered at eBay and omitting the reference to your eBay feedback.

    Wayne,

That's a good suggestion, but I don't think there's a way to get the winning bidder's eMail address to do so. Because of that, the only way to contact them would be through the eBay system.

Thanks, guys. I did ask on an Ebay forum, if what I wanted to do is against Ebay rules and was told it is. So, I will butt out this time, unless I have more proof of a scam.
  • Perhaps merely sending a link to this thread without comment would work.

Well, this crook got NARU'd. Hopefully it happened before any money changed hands.

Russ, I was in touch with the wininng bidder, who was smart enough to insist in an escrow account. Surprise, surprise, the seller wouldn't agree to it.

Some "guy" did go ahead and open a new Ebay account, under which I, I mean he, sent the message I'd posted here previously, to all of the bidders - I, I mean he, couldn't resist. image
