Conder101 some extra info on NGC 3S1

Dena @ NGC admin told me this cause I was having trouble with an entry in a Reg Set:

<<Thanks for sending the scan of the Sample slab. When I first researched the cert # in our system, I came up with a sample coin but a completely different date and denomination (and no grade). When I look at your scan, I can tell by the style of your holder (and the fact that it has a grade) that the sample was probably made during the first few years NGC was in business.
I am guessing at that time they may have thought it was ok to re-use a sample cert # or it was inadvertantly re-used; not sure which is the case. >>

Conder101 can you add anything to this?
I'm calling this a 3S1 but it may not be a true 3S1. Your diagnostic on the 3S1 reads "but "sample" appears on the second line and NGC on the third to the right of where the grade would appear."
This slab insert is identical to a 4S1 EXCEPT FOR the 3rd line.
This insert is also identical to the 3S1 EXCEPT FOR the 3rd line.
The 3rd line instead of saying FA 00 NGC it says MS 60 NGC.
Transitional slab or what?
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

  • It is possible that they may have resued the serial numbers on sample slabs since I doubt if they expected people to look them up. The sample slabs based on the NGC 3 type slab would have been produced from very late in 1987 through 1989 so Dena is right it would be during the first two years of operation.

Does the slab contain a silver dollar?

If it does have the "hot pressed" logo then your slab would actually predate my 3S1. In the later types they normally run with grades first, then NGC is added by the grade, then the grade goes and the FA appears.

I have seen a couple of sample slabs with silver dollars in them that would match your description but I was never able to see the back of the slab to confirm the NGC type slab.

If your slab IS of the NGC 3 type then it should be the true 3S1 and the old 3S1 should be changed to 3S2. And if I am right about the silver dollar then it would be from very late 1987 and would be a "dealer sample" distributed to show off to them the major change from the NGC black slab.

Here's a pict of the obv. The rev logo is full width & consistant with NGC 3S1-6S1

WHOA, whoa, whoa! It can't be consistant with that whole range because there was a MAJOR change between 3 and 4. NGC 1, 2, and 3 use a "hot press" logo (Almost like the slab was branded with a heated iron.) and 4, 5, and 6 use a full width hologram. If your slab has the hot press logo then it would be a new variety and as I said should be the true NGC 3S1 and the old 3S1 should be changed to 3S2. If your slab has a hologram on the reverse then you have a 4S2.

The rev logo looks to be consistant with NGC 3S1-6S1 when compared to the examples in your book which all have a narrow full width holagram. As far as the hot press logo I'm not sure what that is so I better do a scan. #1 is flat on the scanner bed & #2 is propped on a pencil but the same slab.

  • You DO need an updated copy of the book. image

That is the hologram label first used on NGC 4. (Part of the problem with discussing things from a book that is still being written is that new discoveries sometimes require changes or renumbering of items and then people who have the older information have confusion. The numbers for some companies have been renumbered two or three times during the writing of the book. I just renumbered ACG in Sept to get rid of all of the intermediary numbers (.2 .3 etc) because I am approaching the final assembly of the book and then discovered a new earlier variety two weeks later so i now either have an intermediary number or I go back and renumber everything again which means revising over two dozen files!)

So your sample would be an example of 4S2. After my last post here I ran across an NGC 4S2 in my own set with a peace dollar that probaly came from the same batch. Serial number is 199999-022.

Here is an example of the "hot press" logo. This is the back of the 3S1 from my set.
