Opinions?

When sending in a coin for crossover, do you feel that the grade on the slab influences the PCGS graders? Or not? Would the odds be better grade-wise to crack it out and just send a coin in raw? The reason I ask is I have a few crossovers to submit, and my one experience with crossovers got downgraded and it was submitted in the NGC slab.

All opinions welcomed.

it all depends on the coin in the slab i would need to see the coin in person to let you know or at the very least i would have to know the slab and waht it says on the slab then sometimes i can give you an educated guess

If you're only concern is getting the coin into a PCGS holder, regardless of grade, write "cross at any grade" on the invoice. If you feel comfortable cracking the coin out of a holder that's find too. Doing it this way risks damaging the coin, if you're not careful.

I recall reading earlier post's where people were saying you have a better chance cracking out the coin and submitting it raw based on their experiences. Hopefully some of those folks will comment here.

  • I think many people suspect that the reason their coin didn't cross was political. That is that the graders saw it was in some other service's holder, peeked at the grade, and denied the cross at the same grade.

I don't believe that. The graders are not supposed to see the grade on the label. And they don't know what you have put as a minimum grade. This is only my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.

It is harder to grade a coin already in a plastic holder. Especially if the holder is scratched. If you couple that with slightly tighter standards you would expect few coins to cross at the same grade.

I've never cracked out a coin to send it in for crossing. I was always worried it might grade lower. Say if I have a NGC 64, crack it and it gets PCGS 63. Then I might try to get it back into a NGC holder (because NGC 64 is often worth more than PCGS 63) and fail to do so. This could easily happen with a boarder line 63/64 coin.

I am about 1 for 4 in crossing NGC coins to PCGS holders at the same grade. I only tried coins that I felt would cross avoiding those that I felt had no chance of crossing.
