More on choochoocoins

Does this bother anyone?

See the e-mail addresses IN THE TEXT of these auctions:

choochoocoins: look in this auction down near the bottom where it has a link to click on to send e-mail with questions.

work2u: look in this auction in the second paragraph where a contact e-mail is listed.

Note that these two e-mail addresses are the same.

Now check the feedback choochoocoins left work2u on a number of low start, no reserve auctions won by work2u. I tried to find some where work2u bid on choochoocoins items but was not the high bidder (i.e., where the winning bidder paid more due to the bid by work2u) but could not find them due no recent activity from work2u.

  • The guy's using two Ebay accounts and is shilling his auctions. Keep an eye on his auctions and catch him.

  • These two guys (or should I say one guy) ain't too smart. Same email address prominently displayed in the auction listing? Gotcha!!

I also tried to find other examples of bidding by work2u, but I couldn't find any. Who's gonna notify ebay?

  • I have just discovered an "E-bay Powerseller" who has over 2000 feedbacks.
The thing is - he also has over 2000 MORE feedbacks from the SAME E-bay user.

I bid on one of his auctions late last night. This morning I have been outbid....guess who the outbid is by??? Yep - his "alter ego".

His "other" account has 115 feedbacks - from unique users....it actually has over 2000 - almost all from the "other" account.

This is BLATANT! Why doesn't e-bay put a stop to it?image

  • You guys are all wrong i tell you, all wrong!

You are accusing Powersellers of serious infractions. We all know Powersellers do not engage in that that of activity. It is wrong and they know that. Therefore as a Powerseller they would not do that, right?

Besides as a Powerseller they have special priveledges on eBay. That's right, it's called KMA [kiss my apple], because I am an eBay Powerseller and protect by eBay rules.

What this means is they have a license to steal, cheap, mislead and defraud. What will eBay do about it? Nothing as they are only a "medium" to bring buyers and sellers together.

In case some did not catch my sarcasm......eBay will do nothing, maybe a slap on the wrist. Maybe a warning or 5 day suspension. Sellers like this are too valuable to lose. Figure the revenue they bring in with the listing, final value, ebay store, etc. fees and it is easy to see why a few shill bids is not going to shut them down.
  • I think we all have our favorite ebay sellers, but a guy with 2000+ positives and 115 rating? Looks suspicious.

I think if you contact ebay and explain the situation, they'll investigate.

    Edited: to rephrase "suspicious"

  • I'm sorry, I have to say it - Ebay and teletrade are not much better than TV ads for coins. I am amazed at the effort this forum puts into this. Please don't tell me "you can find really good stuff there". And I'm not buying the story about some people have limited budgets so thats why they shop there. Some sage advice - find a dealer you can trust (I know, thats a hard one) and work with them. The money you save in aggravation alone is worth it. Any lincoln cent on either listing is garbage, I would assume its the same for the other series. Maybe I'm wrong. Either way, pick a dealer or friend, you will learn more, enjoy more and probably pay just as much.

    lincolnSence,

I can assure you that the Lincolns I sell on eBay are not garbage...and I don't think Wayne uses eBay as a dumping ground for junk either.image

I know that there is a lot of junk out there even in certified holders and I do agree that finding a dealer that you can trust is by far the best way to find quality coins; but I think that eBay is not any worse than many other rare coin venues and though it may not be easy to find them there are quality coins and bargains to be found mixed in with the junk.

Lucy has to dis-agree with Lincoln'no'sence... I have gotten some very nice coins due to Ebay, but I will agree that it is also nice to have a personal dealer.... Have yet to try Teletrade.....

Gotta disagree with you, on all 3 of these points:
    1) On eBay YOU control how much you want to pay for a particular coin, the TV hucksters TELL you how much you'll pay for the coin. They are marketing to a non-collecting, uninformed customer base.
    2) I have found and will continue to find "really good stuff" on eBay, that is coins priced considerably less than retail right on down to wholesale. Some examples: 1883-CC Morgan dollar, bought raw for $80.00, graded by PCGS as MS-63, 1988 proof ASE, in mint boxes w/COA, bought for $71.00, 1892 Columbian half, PCGS MS-63, $56.00. My local dealer is honest enough, but he would probably laugh me out of his shop if I suggested these kind of prices on these coins. Keep in mind for every coin I bid on, I probably look at 50-100 listings, gives you a pretty good idea what the market price is on any given item.
    3) I DO have a limited budget, that's why I shop there. It would be sweet to have "deep pockets" and go to shows puffing on a Cuban laying down big cash to big time dealers but that's just not in my near future. If I had the kind of money to buy "high end" coins, yes, they would be certified and from reputable dealers. Two of these latest eBay scammers had ZERO feedback AND shades. Only a certified idiot would bid hundreds or thousands of dollars on an auction from that type seller.

  • This particular individual has more personalities than Sybil.

When I had my little 'hassle' with him - he claimed to only be a "middle man" for chattanooga coins, and I'd have to call the "owner".

as it turns out - they were one and the same. Definite sleaze-ball alert here.
  • I am a major supporter of the "fnd a dealer" route myself. I have bought some things on e-bay, and continue to "watch" items and if I find the price is to my liking near the end of teh auction, I will try and snipe it (hate me if you must - it's the only way I bid on ebay).

I like my local coin shops because of incredibly good service. For weeks I have been getting calls and emails from my two local shops informing me they have secured a coin on my want list - putting it aside for me to inspect for purchase prior to making it available in the shop.

This service is invaluable in my opinion, which is why I depend on local shops first, and ebay as a fill in the blank or last resort.

lincolnSence both eBay and teletrade act as a 3rd party in selling coins.
That means you could sell your coins thru either one and if you did would that make them garbage?
  • That's strange Wayne. One of those auctions was for a fed reserve note - it ended at $750 won by work2u but there were mulltiple bids by others, including the next to last @ $740. I don't see the logic in that. Perhaps one copied the auction format from the other and forgot to removethe e-mail referencce...?? I dunno, certainly weird.
  • As with any "institution," you mostly hear the negative side of the story about eBay. I had some unsatisfactory transactions as a buyer at first. But not recently, having gotten an education in the art of buying on eBay.

There are a lot of GOOD PEOPLE selling. I have gotten "Smokin' deals" on a fairly large number of raw coins that now reside in PCGS and NGC holders. On some I turned around and took in large profits reselling them. You just have to be careful, and get to know who's who. To tell people to buy only certified coins is to tell them to cut themselves off from the REAL deals.

BSqr--I'm not saying it is what is going on here, but let's assume ABC has a note worth $1000 and lists it with no reserve. As the auction nears the end, the bidding is no where near what the note is worth. So, ABC uses another ID he/she has registered, DEF, to place a $1000 bid. If the highest legit bid is $740, DEF will win it at $750 and ABC won't have to take a loss on the note. ABC has to pay eBay closing fees but ABC did avoid having to pay the reserve fee.

DanC--they now say the guy who was doing all their listing on eBay has left ("moved out of state"). I think I saw recent auctions under choochoocoins and notice that there is a new e-mail address used on more recent items. It looks like the work2u auctions stopped when the guy moved away.

I did look for recent/current instances of crossbidding and did not find any. If it is still happening, it must be under different IDs. However, it looks like choochoocoins is no longer using the low opening bid, no reserve auctions that could create large losses and are so tempting to potential shillers.
