I got my first 10s

The grades were finally posted for my no strike special order. Take a look at Invoice # 8017614.
I'm pretty happy with my grades (this is only my second submission ever), and I got my first 10s. I'm just slightly disappointed with the amount of 8s I got, but even if I just count cards graded 9 and 10, my cost per card is just over $8, still cheaper then ebay, so its like getting the lower graded cards for free. Most of these cards will go into my Don Mattingly player set, so look for a lot of updates soon.

Grats on a nice submission.
However, I think the "Grader from Hell" has been let out of his cage. I recently submitted five free gradings for my 84D Registry set. All were selected for their chances of earning tens. Results: One 10, one 9, and THREE eights! Now I consider myself a fairly good grader (especially on 84D), but this result is ridiculaous.
Consider this Joe Carter, one of the keys. NO print marks, no stray marks, perfectly focused, sharp, and perfect centering on a card notorious for being OC. This card came from a factory set which means the corners do not some to a point. Graders are supposed to know the difference between factory cards and those that came from wax or rack. I'm not sure this was considered on this beauty, and it was IMHO unfairly downgraded. The card exhibits "ten" characteristics for every aspect of the grading process.
I know it's tough to judge by a scan. But here it is.
1984 Donruss Joe Carter
If I'm buying it's PRICELESS. If I'm selling, it's WORTHLESS.

20% 10's is not a bad return on a submission. Factory set or not, the top left corner of that Carter looks somewhat soft. I am sure that this influenced the grader -- and I am sorry that it did not work out for you better. The card is an absolute beauty -- but soft corners on '80s cards tend to get bad grades -- and I think that it is probably either a strong 8 or a weak 9.

My point exactly. That corner is a perfect example of what differentiates a factory set card from a wax pack card. There is nothing about that corner or the others that disqualifies it from a higher grade. I own three other nines of this card and I will say that this is better than any of the others.
I have scored numerous tens from factory cards in the past, but my most recent submissions have seen a dramatic decrease in tens that my cards have earned. The most recent...1/37.

Everyone,
I also just now received my first 10's.
I must say that I am pleasantly surprised with the results, since this is the first time I ever submitted cards from this set. Most cards came from factory sets, while some of the hi#'s came from those 100 card hi sets.
Not bad percentages (if I counted right)....34.2% 10's, 47.4% 9's, and 18.4% 8's.
Most pleased with the Bonds, Schmidt, Rice and Randolph 10's.

At ah boy, you show em I didn't know you were rollin in 89 ud
I could help you with a smoltz if interested.
Dom,
Boy do I know what you mean I don't think anyone has cracked
more than us un these modern sets yet I think we should be able
to grade them...Some cards I have like 3 variations of registry
and so on yet sometimes the 9' blows the ten away. Of course
neither of the cards leave the house. It's what I call the mm
variation....Sometime my 8 is better than my 9 due to color and so
on I just keep them both.....
Some thought, Matt
Kendall,
Best of luck, I hope you get the same graders I did.
Matt,
Just dabbling for now. I figured ~40 cards every few months, just to keep it moving, but now I'm a little more excited. I'm just afraid I'll be in for a rude awakening on a future invoive. E-mail me about the Smoltz PSA 10.
Maybe I'll open up my 84D set, and see if there's anything worthy to help Dom.
