YOUR Thoughts on a Barber dime Date & MM set

i've been thinking about doing a date and MM set of Baber dimes, graded between VG-VF. Does anyone have any experiance with these? What are some of the great rarities of this set? Looking thru my rebbook, i see quite a few that are 30.00 + in VG. What's the best way to aqquire them? shouldi buy lots of them, and sell off the surplus? or pick them one by one? I'm not overly concerned with cleaned coins, as long as they don't have unnatural damage. (i plan on keeping these coins for 30-40 years, so any signs of cleaning should be gone by then.)

Tahnks for the help!!

Edited to try and get a response!!!

  • It seems like it would be a doable set - the obvious stumper would be the 1894S - but that might not be actually considered part of the circulation set. There are some expensive S mint coins in the early 1900's. I would think the biggest problem would be finding coins in the quality you're looking for in their original state. A lot of these seem to have been cleaned in the past and usually when you see these coins, they're in pretty well circulated shape. It would definitely pose a challenge I would say.

  • as far as the cleaning, i don't care!!! I figure by the time i'll sell it, the signs of cleaning should be gone. (mostly) of course, if the coins have to be AG-G, i wouldn't mind, but i'd prefer vg-f.

It can be done pretty easily within about 6 months to a year if you attend a couple shows and have a good dealer or two around you. I suppose ebay is also a good help there.
As mentioned about the 1894s is out, the 1895 and 1895o are costly but can be found without too much problem. The 1901s, 1903s and 1904s are difficult to find and somewhat pricy, but still not impossible.
I'd recommend it, it's a fun set and sure will look good when you're done. If you can afford it try to keep in the fine and above range, they really do look better that way.

I concur pretty much with Landlord except with the 6 mos. to year. I don't know if you can find all of them that soon or not. It depends on how much you can spend and what grades you buy. You can find a lot of them in junk grades, but I would go vf to xf. I started out in the seventies in g-vg then to vf-xf now I do AU or better. I have some extra coins should you decide to start. PM me with more details.

I have a circ. Barber dime set in a Dansco. Did it last year. Should say, I completed it last year. Had some help from board members and my local shows. There are some tougher dates early on, but all doable.
One note, the cleaned coins will always look cleaned. The signs of a cleaning, most of them anyway, will remain for a lot longer than 30 years. Try to stick to problem free coins. image

The only way the sigs of cleaning will be gone is if you use them as a pocket piece and carry them long enough to reduce the grade to eliminate the cleaning.

And you don't want to do that.

    Stick to problem free pieces.

it's a tough series to collect if you decide to go after pieces w/ a complete LIBERTY, ie. every letter FULL and present. i don't have a price guide in front of me, but i'd imagine a big price jump from VG-F on many dates. off the top of my head, i think 1895's and a couple of 1896's are the really tough dates, aren't they?

  • ohhhhhh. . .

I thought after a couple of decades, the coins would re-tone/tarnish to remove signs of cleaning.

Hmm, maybe i'll just go after a set of cleaned barber dimes.. . . . . Ought to be really cheap. (looking) image
