    The surface.
    Hairlines everywhere.
  • The hairlines (#1 indicator) and lack of luster.

The fields look scratchy like it was wire-brushed maybe?
Otherwise,it seems to have very nice luster showing through on the reverse near the rim.

Looks like a wire brush scrub.

    I will say yes.
There are lines in protected areas that don't look right to me.
That die seems to have some problems thou above the WE on the reverse so the lines might be from something else.

Clearly polished/whizzed. The hairlines in haphazard directions, the reflectivity, etc. The hairlines especially are deep. Only in the protected areas do you see some original surfaces. It's not consistent with general wear.

Yes, the second one was also polished/whizzed.

To me the first one looks whizzed -> a layer of metal was removed -> should be more detail in the hair and also the stars should be more pronounced -> also cleaned/scratched to give the haphazard hairlines which could have been before or after the whizzing -> need magnification to see if scratches partially filled with metal being moved from whizzing.

The second one has been cleaned -> on the obverse if you tilt the coin around you will be able to see a 1/16th to 1/8th shadow in front of the face -> not a glow or whiskers but area that could not be reached by the cleaning method used.

Bummer on both those coins, I hope you didn't buy them for MS63 moneyimage

The red in the pic is probably the red eye reduction flash that many cameras have. Probably something you can turn off by turning off the flash and using non camera-flash lighting.
