72 Ike Variety Help - is this type III?

DHeathDHeath Posts: 8,472 ✭✭✭
I am trying to correctly attribute my newest purchase, and don't have a 71-S to compare to. I believe the islands are too defined to be T-2, and there are 3 main islands, and although it isn't clear in my poor photo, there is a fourth island just above the South American coast. Would this be a T-I or T-III?

I just looked at my 71S and it looks just like your photograph, so your coin must be a type I.

  • You can also compare a 72 Type 1 to a 71-P, 71-D, or 72-D, in addition to the 71-S unc. All use the same reverse.

Your coin, however, is a Type 3.

    My method of attribution is:

    Raised outlines around continents:

Type 1 if outline of Earth flat from 8:00-11:00 (like if the Earth was a ball of silly putty and you dropped it at that point, then drew it in outline form).

Type 3 if outline of Earth essentially round.

    Incuse outilnes around contients:

    Type 2 -- Score! image
