Identifing Whizzed Proof Morgans

By whizzed, I mean specificly, buffed of polished to the point the surface appears to resemble chrome.I may have seen one recently, and I,m sure some do exist but....
Besides the reeds on the edge of the coin, are there any diagnostics to look for in the design on either side of the Proof Morgan?

  • Where I've seen old proofs, if you take a loupe to them you are able to see the metal flow patterns radiating toward the edges of the coin from the center. Whizzed coins that I've seen have hairlines going in the same direction, including over them center device.

Like FC57Coins said, and hairlines going in the same direction, including over them center device but do not go all the way up to the device and on the other side of the device the metal looks like it has been "dragged" and no cartwheel effect but a mirror "chrome" finish like you said. The surfaces appear pitted under high mag.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

This is Proof Morgans were talking about .Right?
Or does this generally apply to all heavely whizzed coins?

All whizzed coins look like that. If you are worried about confusing a Proof with a whizzed coin the Proof is highly reflective & mirrorlike while the whizzed coin is just plain shiny in addition the the forementioned diagnostics.

That isn't always true. I have a nice "California Prooflike" Morgan with nice 18 inch mirrors.

California PL Morgan. Is that the fields were buffed to a mirror shine?
    As in post-strike mirrors?
I could see how it would be possible to do this.
  • Yes and then the devices are artificially frosted. The are absolutely beautiful. They have a similar black and white DMPL DCAM appearance that todays modern proofs can have. I once saw a Peace dollar "California Prooflike" but the dealer wouldn't sell it.

Out of curiousity, How is that done?

I bought one a `21 morgan a couple of months ago just to have an example, there isn`t any frost on the devices, but it`s shiny enough to be able to as a mirror to shave with. I don`t have any intention to frost it, I`m just curious.

I,ve heard of this and I think it involves sandblasting the devices and not the fields somehow.
