anacs packing slip question

I know this is the pcgs forum but I just had to ask.

Can someone please explain what the letters on my ANACS packing slip (for example AG) mean?
A link to a page with definitions would be great.

1903 O $ Cleaned ((AG)) Coin has AU details Cleaned Net EF40 on the slab
1902 S $ Scratched ((AF)) Coin has AU details Scratched Net EF45 on the slab
1895 S $ Scratched ((EI)) Coin has EF details Scratched Net VF30 on the slab
1894 $ Cleaned ((EK)) Coin has EF details Cleaned Net VF20 on the slab

Thank you
Mike

I think I can help some - the codes are listed for "net" grades that ANACS uses for whatever (cleaned, scratched, artificially toned, tooled, whizzed, .....). If a coin has just a number on the packing slip you don't get a grade but a number corresponding to Sheldon's 70 pt scale. So a 65 is MS-65.

The letter jargon has two letters (for the net grades). The first letter is for net category U=uncirculated A=almost uncirculated E=extra fine , etc.

    The 2nd letter corresponds to scale score -> A-60 B-58 C-55 D-53 E-50 F-45 G-40 H-35 I-30 J-25 K-20 L-15 M-12 , I don't know the rest --> down to poor1 i'm guessing.

Somehow they decide how much damage the coin has to figure out what it should be.

Plug those codes back into what you got and it should be the same -> remember on most days these net graded coins would come back in a body bag from PCGS or NGC. The other services do whatever - ACG would probably add 5 to 15 off of the second letter score.
  • Thank you

When selling these do you think I could get close to what the same coin that is not net graded would recieve?
For example should a 1894 EF Details NET VF and a 1894 VF be sold at the same price?

I forgot the first letter is for top level of details seen.

Sale prices -> watching ebay has shown me that it depends on what the problem is and severity of the problem and rarity of coin. Lots of really old copper has been corroded - but the issue is so rare it doesn't matter. Cleaned coins/ Scratched coins depends on severity. I have seen UNC details net 45 sell for anywhere from 35 to 55 price. Most people do not have much interest in buying 'problem' coins, but back to severity/rarity.

The looks of the coin is the key to what it will bring. A nice looking coin will let some overlook a small problem.
