Kookaburra experts/collectors, I need an answer please!

I realize this is possibly in the wrong catagory, but I know a lot of you "litesiders" collect Kookaburras. I saw a 2 oz. $2 silver Kookaburra at my pawn shop today, but it was gold in color as it may have been gold plated or whatever. Anyway it looked gold. I need some info on it as I don't remember the year...but it appeared to be in the mint capsule. Is it legit? What should I pay for it? He offerred to sell it to me for $35 and I didn't want to cheat him (or me), so I told him to see if he could find out what it actually is and a more realistic price.

I did do some surfing/researching on my own and couldn't find anything like it anywhere.

Anyone shed some light on this for me please?

  • Do you remember the picture on it by chance (and I don't mean the one of Liz)?

  • Sorry, I've seen so many of them, I really can't remember. Just remembered that it was GOLD and all of the rest of the before mentioned description. Looked like all the Kookaburra's that I've seen before. Sorry if no help. Somebody out there has GOT to have one of these and know exactly what I'm so dumbfounded about.

  • I'm useless on helping with this one. I have never seen one of them before, but was looking at pictures in my Krause. Darn pictures are in black and white. Did you try posting on the World Coin side? Maybe somebody there can help.

I do not collect silver kookaburras and I have not heard of any gold plated kookaburras. I know that they have issues that have small privy marks in gold. They are issued in 1, 2, 10 oz or 1 kg.

Sometimes air gets into the capsule causing the coin to tone. Here is an example of one I own that is in the original capsule but still toned. Does the pawn shop coin look anything like this?
  • Wow, TheNumish......you got it right on the head, the coin from the pawn shop looks just like that, except it is A LOT shinier....which was what lead me to think that it may be gold plated. It was in the original mint capsule, so that was what also threw me off. Thanks a whole lot. Now...the question is is it worth the $35 he was asking, or would I have been ripping him off if I took it for that price??? My feeling is it's worth more.
