Coin Show Finds (Lenexa, KS)

I just thought I would post regarding some finds I made at the coin show this past weekend, for those interested in die variety coinage...

1942S-1MM-011 : S/S West : MS65RD
1953S-1MM-011 : S/S West : MS64RD
1954D-1MM-001 : D/D/D N & S : MS63RD
1946D-1MM-004 : D/D Northeast : MS64RD
1940D-1MM-002 : D/D North : MS65RB (beautiful toning)
1939D-1MM-001 : D/D North : Nice MS64RD
1938P as yet unidentified class 6 doubled die obverse : EF45

I also came out with a few extra copies of the 1940D-1MM-002 from the same source (and likely the same roll). Another decent find was a 1909S-1MM-002 (S/S horizontal) in F-12, and a 1918/7D buffalo in VG (for 50 cents).

I did a little "shopping" for higher grade stuff as well, and came out with a nicely toned 1909P VDB cent in MS65RB for $10, a 1916P buffalo in MS63 (soft strike) for $5, and a 1940D cent in MS66RD for $1. Not too bad, I don't think.

You cherried a 1918/7-D Buffalo for 50 cents and it gets buried in the footnotes? That would be the highlight of my coin collecting life! image

A tip o' the hat to you!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

coppercoins those are neat coins. Here is 59-D, extra D inside 2nd 9. Shylock has a better picture in another thread. This one is in an ANACS 66 Red holder.

I have a friend who actually makes a hobby out of cherrying varieties and building rolls of them. He so far has cherried over half a roll of 1864L cents that he purchased way below bid because of misidentification, and over 10 lower grade 1918/7D nickels for the same reason. They are out there, you've just gotta know how to find them with the softer and partial dates. The piece I picked up Saturday has a full date, but the 8 is soft enough that to anyone other than the rather experienced eye, it looks somewhat normal. It takes recognizing the straight line inside the loop of the 8 to pick up on the underlying 7. It's actually a fun treat to find, but I really prefer higher grade coins. I'll call it a sideline. So far I haven't found a misidentified 1864L cent.

Very nice coin, Mike. I have a half dozen of those, but none of mine are close to MS66. I think the best of mine grades MS63. I have a bit of apprehension about that particular variety, but I have sided with NCADD on that one in calling it a misplaced D. CONECA stresses that it's a die gouge.

It looked to me like a gouge too, but I guess ANACS feels other wise. I bought it from a dealer who had an entire roll of them.
  • Nice picks Chuck!

I'd be interested in seeing pics of your footnotes, also, if you have some time later.

  • I went to the show, but my time was rather short...maybe 2 hours and barely had
    time to make the rounds.

I also saw that 18/17D Buffalo, but was trying to get the dealer down to 40 cents! image

You did much, much better than I...way to go!!!

Sorry I didn't see you there.

Too bad we didn't meet up, Solid...I thought it was a great show for its size, although the haul wasn't quite what it usually is. Very few Lincoln rolls available, and the ones I did see were overpriced. Hopefully the show in Springfield his coming weekend will come out a bit better on that end for me.
