Serious question regarding authenticity...

Ok, I recently purchased a 50B Williams PSA 8 for my collection. However, when I got it, I was disappointed to see the following white 'mark' on the bottom edge. Now it looks like it could either be on the card, or on the bottom part of the glass, right above where the card sits.

Interesting things to note about the card:

1. I tried to verify the Cert# with PSA and their records show that it's a PSA 9. (BOTN thinks that it could possibly be a 'buyback' from PSA and they just didn't update it in their database.)

2. I tried to check for evidence that the holder was tampered with- I did see a small 'crack' in the glass on the side of the holder, but it wasn't enough to be a 'tamper'-like crack. If anything, normal wear and tear.

Any ideas on what I should do? I'd love to keep this as part of my 1950 Bowman set, but it doesn't really look like a 'true' 8 to me. Plus, I'm not even sure if people would house it in an auction of theirs (ie. Mastronet, Superior)

I'll post a link to the flaw on the card: spot

You can't tell if the mark is on the card or slab in person? -- then there is no way for us to do it via a scan.

If you don't think its an 8, have PSA review it. But if you want to keep it, then keep it.

I thought you want to keep it, now you want to auction it? My advice? If you don't believe its an 8, have PSA review it.

I forgot to ask -- in the Thread Title you imply an issue with authenticity. Do you feel the card is a fake? If thats the case, have PSA review it immediately...

  • I'm not so much interested in opinions on the spot, but what might have occured, or if anyone has had any experience with 'tampered' cards. Has anyone contacted PSA in regards to something like this- that's what I'm asking about.

I would love to keep it in my collection, but not with the spot- that's why I'm considering auctioning it.

And you think the card was tampered with due to a spot that may or may not be on the card? I am really confused. You want to keep the card, unless it was tampered with. And you think PSA can tell you the origin of the spot?

  • Sorry for the confusion. Feel free to email me: anjcollection@yahoo.com for any other clarifications. I'm basically not interested in the card anymore because of the spot. Though I would love to find out from PSA where it's from (whether on the card or on the glass- and if its on the card, why they still graded it an 8). I guess the best thing would be to take it in.

I wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with tampered cards (after they got in a holder) with PSA.

Also, the fact that the Certification Verification system reports that the serial # should be for a PSA 9 card when it's an 8. That seems weird to me as well.

Alot of explanations could exist for this. A simple email to Charlie would likely clear this up.

If the spot isn't on the card, then just have the card re-holdered.

  • Anjcollection,

Email me the cert number of the card and I will look into it for you.

  • The spot has a definite shape or outline. Tap the card to the bottom of the holder and see where the outline sits. Tap the card to the top of the holder and then see where the outline sits. If the place where it sits changes it is obviously on the plastic. I've seen "clouds" like that before on the plastic. Based on the border size at the bottom, the card looks to be off-center a good bit towards the top. It may be possible that this card was a 9 OC that has the centering to qualify for a straight 8. It was probably changed to a straight 8 later, and the data entry person just knocked off the OC and didn't change the 9 to an 8.
  • great advice. the spot looks like its a part of the holder but has slightly affected the condition of the card. i'll work with charlie to resolve this issue. thanks!
