! 1970 Kelloggs Set Composition Revealed !

Well, if you saw the show, you now know that the "Masked Magician" is Lenny Montano, also known as Valentino. Well, duh. We've known that 36 hours after the first special aired. Who is Valentino? According to Extra, he's "...a 42-year old lounge magician who enjoyed moderate success with a bird act."

let me reveal the composition of thegemmintman's 1970 kelloggs set. with a set rating of 9.64 out of a possible 9.66, it looks pretty darn skippy. however, our magician reveals the faults. thegemmintman has either 2,024 or 2,025 grade points leaving him lacking 20 or 21 grade points to obtain the theoretical perfect set based on current psa 10 possibilities. it is somewhat unclear whether he needs commons or star cards to make his set perfect, but here is what we now. the following are the star card rarities: frank howard, pop 2, 2.5 grade points; don sutton, pop 1, 4 grade points; john powell, pop 1, 2.5 grade point (why 2.5 grade points for this loser); brooks robinson, 8 grade points, pop 1; roberto clemente; 10 grade points, pop 1, reggie jackson and ernie banks, 9 grade points apiece, both pop 1s; lou brock, 6 grade points, pop 2; lolich 2 grade points pop 1, and johnny bench, 7.5 grade points pop 1.

thegemmintman is clearly lacking the ernie banks psa 10 card. that accounts for 9 of the 20/20 grade points he is lacking. logic might suggest that he is also missing one of the other star cards listed -- though it is probably not clemente (public auction) in summary, the collection lacks the ernie banks psa 10, probably one other star psa 10, and approximately 5 or 6 commons. the eminent, illustrious and illuminating zardoz probably has a few of those commons. there are a total of fourteen 1/1 psa 10 commons

  • Very interesting analysis. However, I will have to take offense to your comment about card #19 in the set (John Powell). Just in case you aren't aware, which is obviously the case, "John" is the given name of Orioles 1B Boog Powell. Not only was he NOT a loser, but he was AL MVP in 1970.

Just thought I'd set the record straight. Besides, he has a great little BBQ stand outside Camden Yards, which outta be good for something!
  • That's an interesting analysis you have there. Unfortunately the final analysis needs some more work, but I think you know that already. Sorry, you won't get any clues out of me. Better go back to Magician School.
  • Mr. Montano

I am indeed impressed with your post. Quite a scholarly opus, and yes, I do have some common 10's as well a smattering of stars.

But what really impresses me are the words to one of the best songs the Doors ever to be found in your tag line

However what does upset me is the disrespect you show Big Boog Powell. Now there was a player with old time values, got out on the field and banged that ball. Remember he played in a pre-steroid era.

  • boog powell lost all credibility with me when he gave up hanging out at his bbq place at camden yards. a pisser because he was really cool before that point -- back in the good ole days.

gemmintman -- i'm pretty close, though, aren't i? you are missing the ernie banks -- so it is only a matter of figuring out which other star card you are missing. i wish i knew which, but I do not. two stars, banks and someone else, and about five or six commons. will you at least confirm whether your grade points are 2,024 or 2,025? pretty easy to back into one of those two numbers. information will set you free -- why don't you just open your set now?

  • Hey Magicman,

Actually, the G'Man is more needy than it appears. PSA has not updated the Finest Possible Rating on this (or any other sets) for months. With all the new PSA 10 1/1's appearing in this set during the last couple of months, the Finest Possible is now 9.84 by my calculations. Here's how to figure it:

    1. There are 29 1970 Kellogg's Cards that have no 10s and a PSA 9 is the highest grade in existence. All the rest have PSA 10s.

    2. Those 29 cards carry a combined weighting of 44 points (Morgan, Gibson, & Stargell being more than a third of that amount at 16.5 points alone).

    3. The total set composition weight for the set is 210 points. So for a Perfect 10 Set there would be 2100 points possible.

    4. The Current Best Possible Set would only have 2066 points (44 points deducted for those pesky 29 available only in 9).

    5. Divide 2066 by 2100 and you get a new Best Possible Set Rating of 9.838

    6. You're right that GMan's 9.64 is about 2024 points, so he is actually missing 42 points -- although his recent pickup of a Brooks Robinson 10 will get him 8 of those...
