1883 ngc proof67 solid for the grade shallow mirror proof coin which is the usual case
and sometimes these later date proofs were made with a leftover business strike dies and sometimes only struck once!!
i am quite sure this coin was made with a leftover business strike die but this coin from casual/cursury observation was definately struck twice!!
but what makes this coin ultra special and really rare is the monster exceptional color!!
the photo is okie but in person this coin knocks your socks off. you never EVER see a proof three cent nickel looking like this coin, moreso in a superb gem grade!

I'm curious to know what keeps this coin from grading higher, or to put it another way, why is it graded 67.
Thanks.

I love it!! Probably didn't grade higher because of the strike.

it is a 50/50 for me that this coin IS NOT A PROOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it depends on the day i look at it when i get a chance to view this coin
i am leaning towrds a business strike!
so in reality the coin is not that weakly struck and the mirrors are not shallow if you get my drift!
so, i would rather have this coin in an undergraded holder then maxed out
this coin is a virgin so to speak......lol as from the dies
i certainly will not deflower her........lol
great comments guys thanks!!!!!!!!
oh after some close checking i thibk this coin is a business strike!!

Would it be possible to tell if the planchet was heavily burnished even though it was struck on a business strike die, or is the surface too rough on the business strike die that all of the burnishing of the planchet gets roughed up by the non polished die surfaces? I guess that non-burnished planchets struck on proof dies still look like business strikes, I wonder if the opposite holds true.

Lovely toning. A truly special coin.
I find the 3CN the hardest series to distinguish dull proofs from business strikes. This is apparently not unique to me as I have heard confirmation from others more expert than me. The exact same comment was made in Breens "E" for the 1883 3CN. This looks like MS from the scan. The 1883-87 MS gems are hard to find. I am looking for PQ examples. This one is definitely worth a resubmission. Some of the 1883 proofs can be very mirrored. The following is my note on a PR67 1883 3CN in my collection: "Brilliant untoned proof with extreme mirrored surfaces;very strong strike;stripes on 111 are crisp"
this one i posted i think may be a business strike
but after thinking about it the only reason why this coin is not in a 68 holder for me is the light toning dots on the obverse other than that this coin a 68
