Gold coin enthusiasts...

How much do you worry about copper spots? They’re not uncommon on gold coins, are they? As long as they are hidden and not in any prime focal areas, would you let a copper spot or two stop you from buying a coin? Does anyone know if copper spots can lower the grade of a coin, or are they considered to be just a form of toning?

Thanks,

Dan

I don't like them at all, but I guess it depends on their severity. I don't believe copper spots will affect the technical grade of a coin (though I could be mistaken on that), but they certainly affect the eye appeal. Sometimes a spot or two in an unobtrusive place is not the end of the world. But if the coin looks like it has chicken pox, fuhgeddaboutit.

I tend to avoid gold coins with copper spots. I think they are distracting and if they are in prime focal areas or cover extensive surface area they do lower the grade (IMO). I noticed on the NCS website they have before and after pictures of a 1903 double eagle where they successfully removed copper spots. I contacted them and was told that they do conserve gold coins with copper spots. I may try to find a generic gold type coin with copper spots and put them to the test.image

    Hi Dan,

From a dealer's point of view I can tell you that many dealers will either avoid or pay less for gold coins with copper spots. From a grader's perspective, copper spots can lower the grade of the coin from what it otherwise might/would be. It will depend upon the size, location, color and number of the spot(s)/stains. I happen to like some of them because they can be pretty. But, I'm in the minority.
