1998 Platinum $50 Eagle Proofs: 277 PR70s by PCGS??!!

I was just looking over the PCGS pops for the Platinum Eagle proofs.

They have certified 278 for the ENTIRE SERIES, 277 of which are $50 Eagle proofs for 1998!

The same thing is true for the MS Plats: 38 MS70s exist for the entire series, 32 of which are $25 1998 Plats!

These are incredible figures. Did somebody's nephew show up at PCGS with a box of Plat Eagles one day back in 1998? Is this a typo?

Is this wierd?

Anybody have any explanation for this?

That pop has been high for a long time, so I presume it's correct. As far as I know a bunch haven't hit the market, though.

Some of the 1997 dates appreciated nicely, maybe some guy decided to try for a kill with 1998 and he's still holding and hoping.

Or maybe he's Dog98.

I collect some platinums and the 1998 numbers are correct. Only year that they gave out 70s and they went wild with it. I believe that some of the other denominations [1 oz?] had some 70s that year too.

Anyone got a 1998 $10 Plat Eagle in PR69DCAM for sale?
