So how were the other older coins preserved?

After reading a prior postLink, it reminded me of a recent conversation I had with my sister. She asked me how the older coins stood the test of time being so will preserved ( after showing her a ms66 1879-s Morgan dollar I got recently) ? In an attempt to answer her question, I told her I didn`t know and suggeted maybe they were sealed inbetween two pieces of glass. I was trying to give her a pratical answer without really knowing the answer myself.

So, anybody know how these coins ( any coins ie. Barber Coins, Bust Coins, etc... ) were stored or preserved so that we here in the 21st Century can enjoy them?

    CCR,

One answer that comes to mind is "coin cabinets", which prominent collectors were said to have kept their coins in.

One accepted method of the early collecting was to laquer coins. Many of the coins from the King Farouk collection were cleaned, varnished or laquered. The laquer would protect the surfaces. However, removing laquer was a different story and many coins were damaged by unprofessional removal. Acetone is the simpliest way of removing laquer today.
