For the Peace Experts -- Question on a 1922 DDO

I picked up a nicely endroll toned (reverse) 1922-P Peace yesterday @ Buena Park Coin Show.

Upon closer examination I noticed that the obverse is double-die, probably machine doubling. Liberty and 1922 all show a decent shelf-like appearence, even the crown and head has some doubling.

Is this an identified VAM and is it common/rare?

Thanks for the help! I really need to buy the Miller book.

  • Michael - I looked in the Miller book to see if there was any reference to a 1922 DDO but there wasn't - maybe there's something in the VAM book. One thing I did notice, that because because of the immense mintage of 1922 dollars, about 500,000 coins were struck per die pair (as opposed to maybe 200,000) for Morgans in the early 1880's. The result were very poor strikes. On possibility could be that what you're looking at is "die deterioration doubling". This happens when the die is so worn that the letters and perhaps other details of the design just kinda "ooze" out of one side or the other of the particular device you're looking at. 1880CC Morgans are notorious for this, and I noticed in the one that I just got from GSA guy that the many of the letters in United States of America and One Dollar look like they're doubled. But unlike typical double die doubling where all the letters or devices are shifted in one particular direction, in this case some of the letters look like they're doubled to the top, some to the left, and some to the right.

I don't know I'm not very good with telling the difference between the types / causes of doubling. But after a closer look under 20x mag, there's doubling everywhere. The G in God looks like a true double. There appears to be 2 Gs there is also doubling to the nose, mouth & neck of Liberty. You might be right, but the Obverse strike isn't that weak, Reverse is though and I can't see any doubling under all the toning.

    Thanks for the help Frank!

VAM 4 has doubled motto, date & initials. Also called DDO1. #8 on the VAM Hot 50.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Ya that's what I think I have. Being #8 on the VAM top 50, what exactly does that mean. Is that a reference to the 50 most rare varieties or the most wanted or both. Does this also mean $$. I only paid $25 for the coin and its probably a MS 63/64. image

    Thanks for your help Dog

NGC recently started attributing/designating the VAMs for Peace Dollars.

PCGS already designated the VAM#s for Peace Dollars didnt they?
