I tried something different. I tried Fairlaneman's trick suggestion, and turned the camera pointed toward the light source. That got me a darker picture - probably operator error on my part.
Then I tried the opposite effect. I focused the picture, turned off the camera, then turned it on again, but with the lens cap on, then I took the cap off and took the picture immediately. I think it's a slight improvement - the picture with the "B" is the new and improved sample - let me know what you think.

I like that B shot pretty well. My favorite so far.
It sounds like you're taken with this coin - it's really kinda cool. The "B" picture is about as close as I've been able to get to capturing it's true colors. It's in an NGC holder, so you can tell that the background is just a tad darker than real life, but pretty close. The coin itself is mainly bronze/brown in the middle, with blue and purple on the periferies. There is a whole lot of carwheel luster under the coin, which makes the toning kinda glow. The reverse is a nice smooth solid gold toning. Pretty nice for an MS64 dollar.

I am also agonizing over getting the color correct with my camera. I really need a work bench with the lights and stuff all arranged. That way I wouldn't be starting from scratch each time. When I get a decent shot of my twenty cent proof I'll post it.
