2001 SIlver Proof Sets - What's Happening on Price? (Bought a GS to answer!)

My Aug GS shows them at $38 to $41. I see them advertised for $99, and selling on e-bay for $85. Can someone tell me the current GS bid/ask?

  • i think the mint reduced the mintage quite a bit from the previous year.thats the only reason i see
  • I was just checking them on ebay and every one I saw was high $70.00's with a couple hours to go.
They have been busting $80.00 easy. The 99's are tippy toeing around $145.00 to $150.00

  • Brian,

image So many of the 2000 proof sets had problems like haze and spots I think the people shyed away from hoarding the 2001 sets.

I understand there are 4-5 buyers that are accumulating these and it has driven the price up considerably. When it gets up where they want it, they will try to sell while high without impacting the price too much. This type of manipulation happens quite a bit but no idea if one can actually make money doing it.

  • Also, I understand that earlier this year this US Mint destroyed several hundred thousand sets ('99 thru'01) from inventory due to spots caused from poor stotage conditions.

I'm auctioning some Silver Proof sets, 8 in one lot. Here on the BST Coins forum only. Here is a link.

I knew the 99s were high, I did not know about the 2000s. mdwoods

The saga of the different years proof sets is an old story.

The 1999 proof sets were hot and not enough people got in at the ground floor. The prices of the 1999 proof sets shot up after the US Mint closed the door on orders.

Then everyone went and bought up the 2000 proof sets creating an overabundance of them. Prices went down or did not go up!!!

Many got disgusted and did not order 2001 proof sets and missed the boat AGAIN!!! The 2001 proof sets then follows the 1999 proof sets price pattern.

The 2002 proof sets may yet follow the 2000 proof set price pattern? Who knows?

Same thing happened with the 1999 and 2000 state quarter coinage. 1999 issues were hot up to Georgia then dies when Connecticut issues came out by the bucketful.

The last 50 years of US Mint proof issues (and mint state issues as well) are replete with dozens of examples of this on and off years of highs and lows.

Oreville: Exactly. There is a tendency for the number saved to be inversely proportional to mintage.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you all worked for CDN. I bought the week old version on-line for $2.49. Bid/Ask is $75/80... what a jump!

  • This weeks GS shows a healthy $10 jump to $85/$92 bid/ask.

I know that a few highly motivated "promoters" can cause
an artificial price spike but I am curious about the number of 2001 proof sets
they have actually bought and put into their inventory.

At the end of July the 2001 Silver Proofs were bid at $36.

Did they have to buy 10,000 proof sets or 100,000 sets
to more than double the bid price?

I did my part to increase the available supply of 2001 proof sets
by selling 3 sets to a friendly dealer at a local coin show.

    Regards

  • I just sold two 2001 Silver proof sets on e-bay for 85 each, boy was that nice. I have noiticed that the odd years seem to do better 95, 97, 99, 01. I'm thinking that it may be a good idea to buy a few 03's to hold for the following year.
