Question regarding Lovett's tomb medal?

coinguy1coinguy1 Posts: 13,484 ✭✭✭
Are there any medals collectors and/or experts out there who can provide any information regarding a Lovett's tomb medal (N.D. Baker 128 A)?

I bought one at the St. Louis show (with a buyback arrangement with the seller), knowing only three things about it : 1) it is beautifully preserved and toned; 2) the price and 3) I knew nothing else about it!

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, J.S. I looked there and it has some information about such medals, though not this one in particular. But, I now know more than I did when I bought it. image

    Don,

I wish I could, but the coin is back at our office already (I live in a different state). The obverse features what I would describe as a small portrait of Washington and the central reverse displays what I think was a building/tomb of some type. I have no recollection of what the legends might have read. It is probably about the size of a quarter or a bit smaller and appears to have been struck in silver. I might be able to get someone at the office to image it tomorrow and if so, I will post it here. Thanks.

It sounds like a Washington funeral medal of some sort I will try to look through some books.

Well I guess old boy is getting a mite senile...
I did some digging through the piles of books and I do have Bakers book on the Medallc Portraits of Washington after all. image

There were four tomb pieces that were executed by Lovett.
Yours #128 is listed as 4th reverse size 12 Silver.
The other pieces #124-#127 were struck in size 18 in copper and a side mention of some silver also.

Your die #128 Obverse-Bust draped in a Roman mantle facing the left.
Reverse-The tomb in an ornamental border in which are 13 stars. In exergue the letter L.

It also notes a copper piece in the Parsons sale (No date of sale given) and two impressions in gold have come under the notice of the writer of the book.

Bakers book was originally printed in 1885 and reprinted by Chester Krause in in 1965. Your piece shows a value of $30.00 unc. back then in 65.

There are some other tomb pieces listed by other engravers as well.

No illustrations shown but maybe the descripton rings a bell.

Post a picture if you can I would enjoy seeing it.
