1869 Nickel Question

Is there something special about the top of the shield on this nickel?
Sorry about the grainy pics my camera is starting to act up.

  • I am not referring to the cross but rather the lines on the top/side of the shield.
  • Just wondering if it might be doubling or something.
  • Looks like a nice doubled die. The lines should not be running through the annulat like that. Offset doubling, I think that's a class II doubled die. I can never remember exactly what the classes are. i'm sure an error specialist will straighten me out if I'm wrong.
  • Class II is distorted, class IV is offset. It's hard to keep 'em straight. image
  • Can someone please tell me what this 1869 nickel is worth?
    Thanks

  • By asking about the value I am wondering if it would get a premium for the doubling.
  • Anybody?????
  • There might be a small chance for a premium from an error collector, or the right Shield nickel specialist but it wouldn't bee much. There are LOTS of doubled dies in the shield nickel series to satisfy an error collector and Shield nickel specialists are much scarcer than the doubled dies. Even then most of them don't collect them by variety. That keeps demand WAY down and therefor the value as well.
