Which 1943/2P Jefferson is worth more points?

I am thinking about starting to collect PCGS Jefferson nickels and am confused about the registry rating system. I thought it would be fun to look for Full Step coins, but I am having a problem understanding the weighting system. For instance: Which 1943/2P Jefferson is worth more points MS65 or MS64FS?
Thanks, Charlie

  • Hi Charlie,

Here is my understanding of how things work:

The 1943/2-P in MS64FS would be worth more points than the MS65 coin.

Because the FS bonus for this date is 2, the MS64FS coin would be counted
    as a grade of MS66.

I assume since you included the 1943/2-P, that you are talking about the
1938-1964 set with varieties. There are 77 coins in this set. If you add the
weight factor of all the coins in the set you come up with 166. Since the
1943/2-P has a weight of 3, the grade of this coin would count as 3/166th's
    of the total set.

If I am wrong on this, Frank (of the #1 Corso Collection) will be sure to
    correct me! image

Good luck with your set! It is a challenging and interesting set to collect
with the many types of varieties included.

  • Charlie:

Ken is absolutely correct. The weighting is 3/166.

In my opinion the point calculation by PCGS should be the opposite - additional points for difficult coins and weighting for full steps.

By the way a 43/2 MS66FS was just posted on eBay!!!!

If this does not make sense it's because I have not had coffee yet this morning.

One more thing I am not sure about on the classification of full steps. Is it true that if a coin has a hit on the steps that cuts through a step that the coin will not receive the FS designation? This just doesn't make sense to me. If this is true, I guess I don't fully understand the purpose of FS designation. I thought FS designation was basically a way of indicating the sharpness of the strike.

  • Charlie:

The full step designation does not necessarily equal full strike. It simply means 5 full steps without breaks in the step due to worn dies, weak strikes or subsequent damage nicks, etc. There are several other threads with the PCGS definition of FS.

To answer your question a cut across a step will not qualify for FS designation.

So the search should be for full strike and full step Jeffersons!!

  • So a 43/2 is worth about the same total points for the following FS Jeffersons combined - 1939D, 1952, 1953S, 1954 and a 1954S. These coins in FS could sell for $15,000+, probably more.

    Frank,

Have you had your coffee yet? image

Wouldn't the 39-D (weight of 5) be worth more points than a 43/2-P (weight of 3)?

    Ken

P.S. I've got a spare 43/2-P in MS64FS. It is very PQ and I will sell for a small fraction of $15,000!

I knew I should not have responded without my morning coffee. My earlier post was wrong and it is now corrected.image
