If you passed away unexpectedly, what dealer/dealers would you want your family to deal with?

Based on recent events, and the ignorance of everyone else in my family regarding coins, this is something I must take into consideration. I don't plan on falling over, but I found out it could happen. What dealer or dealers would you want your family to deal with? You can PM me if you don't feel comfortable because you might leave someone out. Forgive me in advance, this has probably been asked before. I have a couple in mind already, but it never hurts to get opinions from those in the know. Thanks, mdwoods

One and One only. A Local Dealer located in Vancouver, WA. He knows Me , He knows whats in My Collection and I believe He would treat the Wife and Kids Fairly. Instructions already have been given that if for some reason I Kick Off go to him.

  • Interesting topic.

One of the things that amuses me to no end is when people collect or hoard coins for their "grandchildren". Look if they are not into collecting all they will do is sell grand-daddy's nasty dirty old coins as fast as they can. They did not pay for it so they will sell at whatever. I have seen this happen time and time again.

Please don't ever be deluded into thinking others will share the passion. Or believe they will "not sell". Or they will sell to the person you identify.

I have seen people hang onto summer homes they could barely afford so they could give it to their kids or grandkids. Well when they kicked, the kids had the property up for sale lickity split.

As for my "modest" collection I have a list of 4 dealers and 1 auction house [not Stacks or Goldberg!!!]. I figure that will be a good start but frankly after I am gone it really does not matter!!

And who sez Lucy wouldn't be buried with her Registry sets, her 56 Belair, her 2002 Turbo S, her Doowop & Rockabilly collection, her Betty Boop collection, Her Golden age comic book collection, etc, etc, etc.

Cause, Lucy sounds like a true collector. Someone who would never allow such a thing to happen. mdwoodsimageimage

Mitch/Wondercoin, without the slightest hint of a doubt!
He darn well better outlive me. His efforts would be, in my opinion, unmatched and irreplaceable.

It is explained in writing, how and why to contact PQPeace (Larry Shapiro). Larry, I know, would get the most money for my collection for my wife and family and I would do the same for his if such a tradegy should occur! So.....no dealer (no offense), just a fellow collector/good friend!image

Bowers and Merena without a doubt.

Mitch here also, and/or Andy Skrabalak (probably a split with certain coins going to each)...in a heartbeat. No other dealer would even be considered.

David Bowers without a doubt. He is older than I am. After he retires or passes on I would like to know who will be the next one to replace him in his firm. I would like to see Bowers starting to think of that earlier than later.

The other firms while I might consider using on a selective basis while alive will not get my business after I am gone. But then after I am gone, no one can get my business anyway? image

My wife has been instructed to split my collection evenly among forum members Toneddollars, Gemtone65, and ArtR. If I forgot anyone, please let me know and I'll add your name to the list!

  • I'd like my husband to contact some board members for advice. Also, there are a few Canadian coin dealers I would advise my husband to contact for the Canadian part of my collection.

Just to add slightly to the scope of the thread...four dealers I would NOT want to handle my coins directly: B&M, Heritage, and the two Davids (DHRC & DLRC)...and by no means am I saying that one should not buy from them just that I personally would not want them handling/selling my coins under the circumstances mentioned in this thread (in other words without the direct interaction of one who is very knowledgable about coins). Any questions about why I feel this way? I would be happy to discuss them via PM.

I was slapped across the face with this very predicament last month when I found myself in the emergency room being zapped three times to put me among the living again. It happens, and obviously when we least expect it. After returning home I thought about this very question and decided I would want my wife to contact Jon at Rare Coins of New Hampshire. He knows most of my collection and I know and respect his, and RCNH's, integrity.

One other thing I did after returning home from the hospital was show my wife my stash of unopened GSA Morgan boxes. I then explained to her NOT TO OPEN them to see what was inside. This was guaranteed to happen if I were now pushing up flowers. CM

I forgot to state that I would want Michael Walsh to auction off my Canadian, NFLD and PEI coinage.

  • Dealer Al Adams [Gold Rush Gallery] but, some important coins go back 20 - 30 years and I have left notes for my wife or family to contact select individuals [with phone numbers, etc] for specific coins they have wanted over the years. I really would like most of them to go to collectors I have known and respected over the years. Cacheman glad you're doing well.

I would leave my collection's disposition to two friends of mine who are also excellent numismatists (and have very valuable collections too!) in their own right.

The three of us know each other's collections extremely well; every new coin we've gotten in the past few years have been shown to the other two right away. We even have some favorites that reside in one of the other two collections that are certain to stay within ``the family'' of the remaining of the three of us.

The three of us lend each other money to buy coins, and will actively seek out choice coins for the other collections.

My wife knows the dealer I buy from most of the time. If anything did ever happen she would go directly to him.
  • Well I guess I need to amend the old Will again....geeshh Bryan, I had everything going to you, but if I am not even on your list of people to SPLIT your collection up to...well...well...LOL image

  • Very good topic. My wife would still have NO idea on how to dispose of my collection. I have an inventory log of all the coins and their RETAIL values next to it as a base idea as to the value, but ofcourse when selling your coins to a dealer you aren't going to get anywhere near retail prices for them. Would be lucky to get 60% to 80% for them. Basically she can take the bottom line and subtract fron that on what % he is willing to pay. So if I have $10k, she can get $6k to $8k.

Terrible thing to even think about. Hopefully she could get on ebay and realize better profits than that!

  • My two good friends Julian Leidman and Jay Cline would handle things.
Already discussed with them. And yes this is very good topic that
should be taken seriously by all. First picture your collection spread
out on a table. Then picture a bunch of human vultures around the table.
Then think about this topic again.

  • Without recommending anyone, let me emphasize the importance of having a plan. None of us like to think about our mortality, but do YOUR heirs know anything about coins? I edited The Rare Coin Estate Handbook during my last year at Heritage. It's pretty even-handed in outlining issues and options despite its obvious thrust to generate future auction business for them. If you want one, you can get one off their website pretty inexpensively.

I don't care what anybody does with my coins when I'm gone, since they will no longer be mine. I'm not going to worry about something that will happen after I'm dead.
