Question on an NGC graded coin

danglendanglen Posts: 1,674 ✭✭✭
Just got some coins back from NGC. One of them was an Eisenhower 1990 W Silver Dollar which they grade MS-68. There was a "post-it" note attached to the slab that reads" IMPORTANT MESSAGE" "This NGC coin, cert # 1668660-022 has been evaluated by NCS and is a good candidate for Conservation. Contact NCS directly at (866) 627-2646 for information on how to submit the coin for conservation". Does this mean that if I submit it to NCS it would have a good chance of being upgraded? And if that is not the case, why wouild I want to submit it for "conservation" when it is already in an NGC slab? Has anyone had any experience with this?

Its called cross-marketing. If you love the coin, leave it alone.
Forget about the upgrade, NCS does not upgrade from NGC. The coin will be detailed with a details verbal notation, such as EF details, etc.

It means the coin must be nasty and they want to charge you $$ to fix it.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I got the same note back on a toned proof Morgan dollar. I liked the toning so I just ignored the note. Is your coin toned ?

No, it's a modern commemorative I submitted right out of the mint packaging. NGC graded it MS-68, so it can't be that ugly. I could understand it if it was lower grade coin, but it's hard to see what needs conserving.

  • It's my understanding that NCS can get rid of a lot of haze and spots that can hold down a grade.Russ has actual experiance with them. From what I remember he was satisfied with their work.

  • IMHO, theres not enough price difference on that piticular coin to warrant further expense's. image

Here is what NCS will do to your coin or something simular. I under stand you can request to have certain things done but not absolutely sure on that. I also understand that if in thier opinion the Coin will not meet the given grade they will do nothing to the coin.

I guess NCS must have alot of free time to evaluate coins going thru NGC.

For those who are not aware, NGC and NCS are the same entity.

  • All together now,

    NCG, NCG
Doctored coins for you and me.
Send 'em back we'll fix them up,
Lots of upgrades in your cup.

These jokers attached the same offensive post-it note to a stunningly rainbow toned Proof-66 Benson Seated Quarter that I sent in for grading. If there was ever a coin that deserved to be left alone that was it. It is truly sad to see this happening.

Put away your koolaid for a second and analyze what they are saying. They are telling that they can restore either luster or make the coin more eye appealing. If you have questions pick up the phone and call them, they will explain to you what your options are. If you like the coin the way it is leave it alone. All they are doing is giving you a choice. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. You PCGS shillers either are not aware of the program or just completely anti NGC or whatever. These kinds of comments are what prompted the thread in regards to being tired of some of the advice that is given out. Once again if you like the coin the way it is, do nothing.

NGC does not own NCS, they are seperate entities under the same corporate umbrella, no different than David Hall Rare Coins, PCGS, etc. etc.

Thanks Mike. I'll give them a call and see what they have to say.
