I get all the way home got back in the car to see

Leo and Betty. Husband and wife coin dealers from Ann Arbor, who I had just purchased 5 raw Indian Head cents from at the local South Bend show held monthly. Now you have to sort of yell at Leo to have him understand you and his wife Betty is one of the nicest ladies you would ever want to meet. Last month they tried to sell me my first Liberty Nickels and I passed. This time I got home and said why not and drove the 20 minutes back to the show. I purchased the 1902 which was Betty's favorite coin. I promised to email her a picture, but she admitted to me that she hadn't figured out how to make pictures happen on her computer. I left the 1895 behind with a promise to purchase it next month if they still owned it. I had to lay the coin flat to capture its true beauty. It has target toning on both sides, gold, blue (my favorite two colors) and pink center.

    Awesome.

I would take a Geiger counter and check those first, though.

With that glow to 'em, they look as though they might be radioactive... image

    Mike,
That's a complete stunner. Looks reflective - is it a proof or just the photography?

The coin has a lot of luster to it, the color is deeper than shows on the coin, unless you get some intense light on it. It's MS and yes I am going to have to have to slab it just to satisfy my own curiosity. It really is a stunner in person. I just couldn't capture the coin as it almost is without laying it flat. I used a natural light, GE rich white lite which enhances skin tones and warm colors. I tried using halogen to no avail.

Baldy, would love to go to the show in Indy, but if I do, I will undoubtedly spend the $$ I am saving for FUN in January. BTW Leo and Betty will be there at FUN. He was kinda down today. Last month someone stole his AU Red 1877 IHC, that he had owned for years. I almost purchased it twice previously. image Keeping my eye out for it, if it shows up on Ebay. It was stolen at a show in Logansport, IN.

Awesome color, reminds me of the ocean rolling in on a Bermuda beach. The way you imaged it makes me feel like diving in! If I ever have a pool built I'm now inspired to have a big V painted on the bottom.

jmwarren, you could be correct, opinon was about 50/50 among the dealers and collectors. I will let NGC decide the issue, if they say AT I won't admire the beauty of the coin any less. I willingly admit, even having attended a seminar at Central States taught by Scott Travers that there are many coins that I would never have a clue about whether the toning was caused by a recent, intended event. image That reminds me of a certain Roanoke, well I won't go there.
  • Great color, good luck with NGC

An awesome specimen. NGC is obviously the right choice for a coin of this aesthetic calibre.

I have a Seated Liberty dime with beautiful cobalt blue toning caused by the type of paper holders the previous collector used.

Mike, she's a real looker and I'm with you, I wouldn't care if it was AT. It's beautiful. Post a pic once it's holdered. I'd love to see how NGC grades it (market or technical). It's too pretty to be average.image

  • Mike how did you shoot that coin?

    Digital? Flash? etc. thanks

I use a Nikon digital 885 with a 2X lens attached. I have an adjustable light clamped onto a table with a GE natural light bulb. I could only pick up the coins color by laying it flat. The color on Liberty Nickels is subtle and hard to pick up head on.
  • That is a really cool coin. I don't believe I have ever seen nickel toned like that before.
