Most consumer items are marked up 100% to 200% by retailers. It's unlikely that HSN deviates a great deal from this. Most coins on the other hand are marked up much less in the industry. Many collectors can even buy wholesale. HSN marks up coins 100% to 200%. These guys aren't the devil incarnate. But they do sell coins at about the highest price you can find.
I saw some generic morgans on there one time. Some were NGC and some were actually PCGS. Thinking they were just nice BU common dates and the price wasn't as hateful as I would expect. I don't remember what it was but do recall that it wasn't too bad.
I don't know if good deals can be had. The hawksters pitching those coins have the loudest, whiniest, most exceedingly obnoxious blabber mouths that I usually start to feel a siezure coming on and I am forced to turn the channel.
Yes, everything has a high mark up. That is because TV costs a fortune in overhead. This isn't good for the consumer but as long as the consumer doesn't know how to get coins cheaper HSN will continue to do business. This goes back to that "knowledge is power" thread, BTW.
I happened to be watching their show late one night, when the hawker brought out a roll of 1940- something Walkers in GEM condition, He said "Let me open this roll and show them to you." The next thing you hear is a roll of Walking Liberties hit the floor.

They are a vile blight upon the hobby.

Maybe another cup of coffee and a couple of aspirin will help that hangover.

I wonder if they still sold them as "GEM".
