The type one Franklin 56 proof used the same design as the 50-55 Franklin halves. The Eagle has less definition on the type one as opposed to the type 2 which has more definition in its feathers. The type 2 also has the detail on the liberty bell less defined then the type 1. The type 1 is the rarer of the two.

check the eagle on the reverse and count the wing feathers to the left----your left----of the perch. type 1 has four feathers, type two has three. the easiest way to be certain is to look at two coins already certified as T1-T2 over at eBay.
Well, that was information worth following up and why the specialist has the advantage. Just checked my binder and discovered it contained the Ty. 1. I have more luck cherry picking my own inventory than anyone. So what is the typical price difference between the two in say PF65?
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.
The estimate is that there are only about 5% Type I proofs. I've seen type I's in lower grade non-cam condition go for as low as $49 in PR66. Where you get into the big bucks is when you have a cam piece - say in the PR67 range and above - that's where you start seeing prices click over $1000. The type II pieces you can pick up for about the same price as common Franklins of that time period.

Check out the detail on the eagle's wings in the pictures below - should be pretty evident.
